I got jumped and robbed.

T
theopenlife Jul 5, 2008

I plan on writing more details later, but here's the short version: last night I got jumped and robbed by three guys while on my way home from work on a bicycle. Suddenly three people were kicking me and throwing punches, and I was backed up against a fence. Yes, it was very frightening, but the Lord preserved my composure to a surprising degree.

I determined not to fight them, though I had (and believe I know how to use) a knife in my back pocket, on the principle that it was better to trust God with my life and preach the gospel than to fight and have no gospel credibility with these guys, and probably still get mangled. I am not sure it was the wisest decision, but it was the one I made.

Thank God, they bugged out when I told them to stop, and to allow me to tell them something important. In return, I offered my possessions willingly. The guy who kicked me looked ashamed and gave back what he had taken, saying, "I can't take this from you, man." I said, "Here, take this, but let me tell you something!" He refused to take the expensive stuff I offered him, nor would he let me tell him the gospel. Looking confused, convicted, and frustrated, they suddenly all ran off into the night! I yelled the gospel after them, "I was like you, I was a slave of sin! God is alive! Something didn't come from nothing! God will judge you and you'll go to hell unless you come under Jesus for forgiveness!"

I went home with a bruised shoulder, a lot of adrenaline, and many thanks and prayers on my lips to God, for delivering me, and that they might be saved. All they stole was an mp3 player filled with an audio bible and hell-fire gospel sermons by Rolfe Bernard, such as "The God of the Bible kills people." Pray that the Lord may use this to save some or all of them.

And tonight, in a series of weird events, I broke up two fights (to my near peril) and also lost my wallet. Inside was my driver's liscense, debit card, some cash, insurance cards, and some dear old photos. I called the gas station where I left it (here we go again) on my car roof. No one turned it in. Oh well, perhaps someone will get rocked with conviction and repent unto salvation.

A note of encouragement: We're all so far behind the standard of holiness that Christ deserves. Let's pick up the slack and motivate one another to love and good works, so that we don't have time to waste or sin. Let's pray more! Gather prayer meetings in your home, call your friends and do something eternally significant this week.

God bless you, brothers and sisters. Thank God in Christ for saving my soul and sparing my life several times this week.

Wow. What a happening. Stay strong dear brother, knowing that the Lord Himself bore much severer trials on this earth.

Heb 12:3 (Amplified) Just think of Him Who endured from sinners such grievous opposition and bitter hostility against Himself [reckon up and consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you may not grow weary or exhausted, losing heart and relaxing and fainting in your minds.

Sometimes it seems that while we're walking with Christ, and everything is going fine and dandy, all of a sudden out of nowhere the hoards of Hell leap upon us with a mighty vengeance and seek to destroy our faith. -But only with the permission of God, so they may purify and strengthen.

1Pe 1:3-9 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4). To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, (5). Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (6). Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: (7). That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold thatperisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: (8). Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: (9). Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

I had a quick question though with regards to your statement?

I determined not to fight them, though I had (and believe I know how to use) a knife in my back pocket, on the principle that it was better to trust God with my life and preach the gospel than to fight and have no gospel credibility with these guys, and probably still get mangled. I am not sure it was the wisest decision, but it was the one I made.

What do you mean that you're not sure it was the wisest decision? Do you mean that not fighting back was not the wisest decision? Just asking for clarification. You don't have to answer if you're too busy, or loaded down with things right now, but I was just wondering.

But be encouraged brother. God is on the Throne.

Dear brother. Thank you for sharing this. May God give you victory over this fiery trial. Is there any major financial loss in this? ie buying back the drivers license etc? thank God for you obeying the Spirit of God in not fighting back.

Can you imagine our Lord Jesus Christ fighting his way out of people trying to throw him off the cliff? Oh no! God forbid. May we be meek as lambs and offer our bodies to Him as living sacrifices.

This reminds me of a story when Keith Daniel was stabbed repeatedly and he just cried out for their salvation. The same confusion came over them when we try to share the gospel. Oh dear brother this is a spiritual warfare and battle. Let us never forget that.

Brother this is a powerful display of christ character shining in a man. As the last post states by greg can you imagine Jesus fighting back when they tried to throw him over the cliff. Sorry it happened to you however, thanks for sharing it. and remember where sin does abound grace does much more abound. and for the robbers may Gods still calm voice echo in their hearts to convict of sin and cause them to cry "what must I do to be saved".

Praying for you, brother!

I also hope that your attackers will listen to some of those sermons in the MP3 player! Wouldn't it be awesome if they came to the Lord as a result of a mugging?!?

Thank you for sharing!

Amen. Praise God. This is so encouraging. I loved that you were meek and prophetic like Christ. You told them of the doom of sinners yet showed submission. I believe when Christians display the full character of Christ, its the most beautiful thing to witness.

Amazing. Praise God brother! What powerful witness for the Lord, and perhaps it was God's providence that they stole your mp3 player... may these guys get converted! In Jesus name, Amen.

ps. Glad your safe, Mike. :-)

Many thanks for the encouraging and compassionate words and prayers shown towards me, here.

Greg, there was no significant financial loss, more of a hassle than anything.

Eli, my hope and trust to God as that - as in everything - His providence intended this event to secure His greater praise, and be a blessing to those who will believe. Whether or not these robbers are being fitted to destruction, or prepared for glory as vessels of mercy, God's will be done and His name be thanked for all things.

Joseph, my doubts were not so much about if I should have fought, but if I should have immediately started preaching. I determined to preach, but I don't want to give the impression to all people that each and every time you are attacked, jump headlong into the gospel. Sometimes Paul reasoned differently first, for instance pitting the Pharisees against the Sadducee's. Like I said, I'm not sure, but "it seemed good at the time", and I figured I might get beat up in any case, so it was better to take punches while telling them how to be forgiven for their robbery.

Greg mentioned the sermon by Keith Daniel, "This reminds me of a story when Keith Daniel was stabbed repeatedly and he just cried out for their salvation." I heard that sermon as well, and it powerfully influenced me. Three years ago, before my conversion, I ventured into an abandoned house in the countryside at night with a couple of friends. Suddenly I realized I was being assaulted by a homeless person and instantly drew a knife on the attacker, having no compunctions about killing him. Thank God I didn't, because it turned out that my friends had set me up to scare me as a prank. They didn't expect me to become violent! Many other times I wielded a violent willingness against people that threatened me.

Since coming to Christ, however, I have been subdued to fight with prayer and faith, knowing that my true enemy is the devil, of whom such people are "ensnared of the devil, taken captive by him at his will." [2 Tim 2:24-26] How can I put my physical welfare above my neighbor's spiritual welfare?

Whether or not there is a place to defend others with physical force is a subject for another thread, and perhaps has much support, but for personal situations, I feel resolved at present to seize whatever opportunities possible to witness of Christ. Brandishing a knife while telling them the gospel seems like a hard presentation for anyone to swallow.

The messsage you mentioned;

Praying they hear it and the whole catalouge of messages on it.

sermonindex Jul 6, 2008

Hey Michael, dear brother, thanks for the response. I really like what you said:

'How can I put my physical welfare above my neighbor's spiritual welfare?"

This reminds me of a little snippet I read from John Piper the other day:

"What do the supreme court ruling on guns and the martyrdom of missionaries have to do with each other?

Noël and I watched Beyond Gates of Splendor, the documentary version of End of the Spear, the story of the martyrdom of Jim Elliot, Peter Fleming, Ed McCully, Roger Youderian, and Nate Saint in Ecuador in 1956. That same day we heard that the Supreme Court decided in favor of the right of Americans to keep firearms at home for self-defense.

Here’s the connection. The missionaries had guns when they were speared to death. One of them shot the gun into the air, it appears, as he was killed, rather than shooting the natives. They had agreed to do this. The reason was simple and staggeringly Christlike:

The natives are not ready for heaven. We are.

I suspect the same could be said for almost anyone who breaks into my house. There are other reasons why I have never owned a firearm and do not have one in my house. But that reason moves me deeply. I hope you don’t use your economic stimulus check to buy a gun. Better to find some missionaries like this and support them." [end quote]

I still believe the words of Jesus, that we should turn the other cheek, and love our enemies.

Thanks for sharing, even though it was a bad circumstance physically, it has brought glory to God. And who knows, now that you have been acquainted with your attackers, and you have escaped their grip, little do they know, that they can never escape your grip as you pray for thier conversion. Little do they what they have gotten themselves into! Praise God!

Joseph, thank you for this wonderful thought,

"Now that you have been acquainted with your attackers, and you have escaped their grip, little do they know, that they can never escape your grip as you pray for their conversion. Little do they what they have gotten themselves into!"

Perhaps hundreds will hear of them and pray for them through sermonindex and other places! Oh, thank God for His "mysterious" providences!

If they got bugged out by your witness, they are in for a real treat when they get a hold of Rolfe Barnard's preaching.

(& the gospel is still running after them.. God's bloodhound)

I pray that water may water fall upon the seed & for God to give the increase...
