Baptism and Greek

Can anyone with a decent grasp of NT Greek tell me if I'm wrong?

Baptism is "in" the agent "unto" the purpose. So every baptism has to have an "in" component and an "into" component (corresponding to the Greek words "en" and "eis")

e.g. Baptism in water unto repentance
Baptism in cloud/sea unto Moses
Baptism in S/spirit unto one body

thanks in advance

Here is a thread you might enjoy.

This thread is from 2004, so there is a possibility that someone who has posted on there might have a different position now. There is some really good material in that thread though.

EDIT: I've read through large chunks of that thread a few different times. Someone should make a book out of it. :-)

Well, it all depends on how it is being used. You can talk about baptism as a noun or a verb. In/of/unto will all depend on if the Greek requires it grammatically or if one of those words is supplied.

Ok, to further clarify my thinking: after reading through the aforementioned thread, I wanted to further study the baptisms in scripture. 3 of the baptisms, which I mentioned, use this construct of "being baptized in the agent unto the purpose." So am I right in thinking that God's use of prepositions is critical to understanding what is happening at the baptism? If so, then I need to dig deeper into the baptisms where this construct is incomplete.

We see baptism "eis" Christ and His death, but no "en" (Rom. 6)
We see baptism "en" the Holy Spirit, but no "eis"
We see the baptism of Noah and the 7, where neither is explicit (although I see it as "en" ark "eis" Noah, paralleling Moses and the Israelites).
We see Christ's baptism He discussed pre-Gethsemane where again neither is explicit.

Good luck in your study. I don't know if I can be of further help, but I read the book before I really understood Greek, and remember it having a discussion of the Greek on this topic. I recommend, "The Charismatic Theology of St. Luke" by Roger Stronstad.

Romans 3:24-25 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

eis and ev; eis: buried with him by baptism into death: Flesh. ev: walk in newness of life.
Spirit.

This is the baptism into and in Christ:

Romans 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Baptized into His death: "the body is dead because of sin." In His Body was the sin of the whole world. eis fleshly, and if you be in Christ ev; Spirit.

Colossians 1:27-28 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Colossians 1:27-28 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles ; which is Christ in you , the hope of glory : Whom we preach , warning every man , and teaching every man in all wisdom ; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus :

All en, or ev, same thing.

Even, "among the gentiles" should be in the gentiles, to stay with context and after Acts 28: 28.

Romans 9:1 I say the truth in Christ , I lie not , my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost ,

Paul is both ev Christ and ev the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 1:13 Is Christ divided ? was Paul crucified for you ? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul ?

Do you see eis is the flesh and ev in the Spirit.

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh , but in the Spirit , if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you . Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ , he is none of his .

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you , he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you .

Not to put God in a box, but eis: fleshly. ev: Spirit

In ev Christ: Phillip
