Why is there a 74-80 minute limit for burning to cd's when they have 650-700 mb's of storage available? Thanks in advance!
I just hooked up a CD burner for the first time and am perplexed. Why is there a 74-80 minute limit for burning to cd's when they have 650-700 mb's of storage available? Thats for audio length playable in an stereo system. You can fit 100's of low quality mp3's on the CD and have 100's of hours or playing time but its only playable on the computer or a stereo cd system that supports mp3 playback. Really the reason that you can fit only 74-80 minutes is because its uncompressed sound, therefore good quality. When DVD's become standard that uncompressed time value will increase alot, im not sure the exact playing time on a DVD I think its about 2 hours or even more.
I apoligize, I'm not that computer savy. If a track "art katz's tragedy sept. 11" in particular which is 85 minutes long, is converted to wav format for burning and still under 650 mb's wouldn't you be able to still place it on a single cd even though its longer than 74 minutes? (and no, I haven't coverted it yet so it may very well be over 650 mb's... if so I didn't realize they were compressed down that much.)

No need to apologize dear brother, this type of thing boggled me abit and still does. For recordings over 80 minutes you will have to split it to get them on 2 CD's. I like to split lets say a 84 minute recording into 2 palatable 42 minute clips. Unfortunaltely many of the older sermons are longer than 80 minutes, but thats a good thing right ;-)
