Anyone ever heard of an evangelist named Roberts Liardon
Yes. He wrote a few famous books, namely, "God's Generals," which documented the good, bad, and the ugly of various early Pentecostal/Charismatic pioneers who either gained a lot of attention (one way or the other). It's a decent book if you can stomach the Word of Faith doctrine laced throughout.
On a more somber note though, Liardon has turned away from the faith. He is now an openly practicing homosexual, though, still professing to being a Christian. I believe he is still trying to "preach," though, last I heard he was leading tour groups to Israel.
Interesting, how through God’s infinite wisdom he was able to bring about such an amazing interpretation in the light of a world that is filled with so much darkness, and yet to some the interpretation of his writings are grievous. Countless others have tried to bring about a revelation of the many gifts offered to the church for the purpose of edification yet one must question the style in which the revelation was to be presented, in such an interpretation.
Amazingly, after thousands of years his writings still speak a vast of wonders, and in six days God created the earth, and on the seventh he rested. These books were but a mere guidance of the hunger in a man’s soul to search and interpret truth, that we may see it in a different light, for God is light.
The hx and knowledge that out dates those that came before us will forever speak until the end of time, and yet thousands upon thousands travel from one place to the other in search of a spoken word.

It has been a long learning process for me to accept the fact that many of our so called Generals of the faith, according to scripture were not God's at all.
Can good fruit come from a bad tree, or bad fruit from a good tree.
I have had to listen to pastors rave about someones ministry and give that same minister a pass on their doctrine or behaviour.
Instead of exercising good sound judgment and doing what Romans 16:17 says
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Instead of avoiding bad teachers we call them Gods generals because they had power...
Who's Power May I ask????
Just a thought. Even John Wesley and Johnathan Edwards would question the source of the power of the French Prophets, with their strange deep bowing, and jerking, and strange behaviour, the laughing, and laughing, one lady had a laughing fit that lasted for three days unto her torment, before John Wesley prayed for her and she was delivered. may 9th 1740,,,. Interesting reading.
10 years ago I went to Wales during a missions trip to India and Israel, and stayed with Arthur Burt, who was interviewed by Liardon in 98? as the contact man for his Wigglesworth piece of GENERALS. Burt travelled with Smith, and knew several first hand anecdotes of him.
I read the work then, and thought that it was well written, and encouraging. I wish that someone would write a volume of "Generals", and a separate one for our sisters, including sisters only.
The reason for me, is that books like these portray how common men are chosen to be uncommon vessels, and exposes their struggles in the light of faith...and how they overcame. It is also curious to me, to see some of the ways their faith was manifested. It often was as bodacious as Peter stepping out onto a rough sea for a stroll to His Master. Liardon did a good job, I thought.
I had heard about his fall, and am saddened to hear of no repentence. I, for one, will pray, and ask the Lord to grant his repentance. Jesus washes all shame away!

Are you familiar with the book "From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya - A Biographical History of Christian Missions" by Ruth A. Tucker? This book comes close to what you are asking for, I think. It focuses on individuals, including females as well as males, who made a difference in spreading the Word. Interesting read, IMHO.
