July 23, 2008 report from the Washington based Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life

“Although many Americans are highly religious, they are not dogmatic in their faith. 70% of Americans with a religious affiliation say that many religions - not just their own - can lead to eternal life. Most (68%) also think there is more than one correct way to interpret the teachings of their own faith....83% of mainline, or traditional, Protestants believe that different religions can lead to salvation or eternal life....57% of evangelical Christians believe that different religions can lead to salvation or eternal life.”

This U.S. Religious Landscape Survey is based on interviews conducted in English and Spanish with a nationally representative sample of more than 35,000 adults.

Wow. That's apostasy in gargantuan form.

2Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

The word of God does not change...only those who find the word of God more precious than the treasures of this world will escape the deceptiveness of the unrighteous.

This is why separation from the world is not some old religious ideal, but an essential spiritual hallmark of a real Christian. The world's religion is that there is a divine entitlement owed to all of humanity. (Nobody loves entitlement more then we do.) Now a flood of unregenerate preachers, borrowing symbols and vocabulary from Christianity for their worldly rebellion, win thousands of converts to a belief system no different then the very belief system sinners are already lost in.

There is a flood across the Earth indeed. Millions claim Christ as a source of strength for their troubles, but it is natural that men are concerned over their troubles. Yet the sons of God are sorrowful over the lack of true worship marked with a fearful conduct for God's name. Is our sorrow only self-concerned? If so, then happiness, rather then righteousness, will be the heart behind our worship. You cannot ever hope to stand against the flood, if you aren't even separated from it in the first place.

As it was in the days of Noah...

When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

This is the "falling away" that is prophecied in scripture.

There have been other dark hours for the professed church.

I lean towards the idea that the great falling away will (if we can imagine it) be far worse and sinister. The scriptures seem to imply a world-wide persecution of the true church by the very ones who fall away. (Matt 24, I recall)
