[i]Helpless I foundered! - all my strength
Succombed beneath the increasing load;
I failed; yet failing, still stood firm,
For radiant from the Child there flowed,
Not weight alone, but strength to bear,
Pain, and the courage to endure.
Love to fulfil all love's demands,
One the affliction with the cure...
He bows me down, He holds me up.
Through sucking mud, and clinging weed,
For I am weak, and He is strong,
His sustenance supplies my need.
Oh, bitter toil! Oh, perfect rest!
Oh, starlight on the troubled sea!
I place my yielded hands in His;
The Child I carry, beareth me.
