Lord of the Rings

While searching, I noticed many Christians enjoying Lord of the Rings and 'comparing' it favourably with the Bible ie good versus evil.

My face became more and more grim and inwardly I was screaming. I finally found a website that gives biblical reason for why it is wrong. Such websites are very rare and thus am putting it down here for those that think these type of shows are ok.

Acts 19:19, “And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of all; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.”

Moses cautioned the children of Israel: “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable way of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord has not permitted you to do so” (Deuteronomy 18:9-14).

With respect to the evil kind Manasseh who reigned in Jerusalem fifty five years the Bible states: “He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, followed the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites” (2 Chronicles 33:2). “He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced sorcery, divination and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, provoking him to anger” (2 Chronicles 33:6).

I find myself grieving when people compare Gandalf (sp? It's been so long since I've read them) to Jesus Christ. Comparing Jesus to a wizard is blasphemy!

Not to mention the problem of having a "good" wizard. It just doesn't happen. Even if it's fantasy, it's still not good to have something God calls an abomination portrayed as a good thing or role model.

There certianly IS a great falling away today - that is why most Christian's hold true to LOTR and even H.Potter.

When I was born again, I lost interest in seeing the show. However, recently I saw a few of the youtube clips as I was searching for something. However, my mouth was grim throughout the few clips that I watched. Didn't know why (somehow I forgotten all about the witchcraft thing in the bible). Then yesterday when looking at the biblical map, I was struck that there seem to be something similar in the city names between the show and the bible. That was what prompted the search and felt myself getting grimmer when I kept reading the internet sites comparing favourably Christianity to the show. Couldn't really comprehend fully why I was feeling that way (as somehow still had forgotten about the witchcraft verses mentioned in the bible) until I found the website explaining it. To top it off, also recently I had read a few articles by a 'Christian healer' saying to make friends with witches and bring them to Christ etc. Didn't exactly resonate well with me (and yet I forgot about the verses in the bible on witchcraft).

Coincidence??? I think God wanted to tell me to avoid these type of shows and gave me a more definite view on that Christian healer and the reason why--maybe somehow I'm going to be exposed to them again real soon ????

Something has struck me. We all know thinking evil or adultery thoughts are wrong. Yet we seem to forget that seeing make believe witchcraft is also wrong. If we were to apply the knowledge that 'wrong thoughts' are still sin, then surely watching things such as make believe witchcraft is wrong. Thoughts are not actions, yet they are still sin in God's eyes. Makebelieve witchcraft is not real witchcraft but its still wrong as it gets one to think of witchcraft.

I think if we apply this analogy to explain to 'Christians', it will help them understand better why shows such as Harry Potter and LOTR are not suitable for us.

In both the shows, there are good points for eg: good triumph over evil, self sacrifice which make it difficult for people to realize why it is bad. But that cannot and must not be why it is ok to watch such show. If that were the case, then it will be like saying in worldly terms--so long as you don't steal but you entertain thoughts of stealing, its ok and not a sin--something which is contradictory to Christianity.

Got to further thinking. That means many of the children books will also be wrong where they have make believe characters such as pixies, fairies etc--books by Enid Blyton for example. I don't think make believe characters is something that God will want children to read. I think some daydreaming for kids is ok as this is how the brain expands but pixies and fairies--don't think so?? :-o

Just walk in Love, they really don't know what they are doing. They are being seduced and taught by Jezebel her demonic-self. Just don't dialogue with them, that's how the demons want you to hock up with them.
