5 days until the Atlanta, Georgia Revival Conference

“Have you been born-again?” This is the question that the Norwegian missionary Marie Monsen began to ask the American missionaries as well as the Chinese Pastors in the early 20th century in Shantung. Churches were not growing and the life among Christian leaders was discouraging. Marie Monsen not only asked Christian leaders if they were “born-again” but also if they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

This naturally caused tension among the Christians but after some time some evangelicals admitted that they were putting up a front and had never experienced assurance of salvation from sin. The Holy Spirit used the questioning of Christian leaders to convict them of sin, righteousness and judgment. Missionaries and pastors were saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. This brought the revival in Shantung which changed many churches and laid the foundation to much of the magnificent work of the Holy Spirit in China we read about today.

The conditions of evangelicals in America today are similar to the conditions in China at the beginning of this century. There has been relatively little effective evangelism in America in the past quarter of a century. Fuller Seminary professor C. Peter Wagner tells us: “America has not seen significant numbers of unbelievers come into the church since the days of the Jesus movement.” We are told that most recent church membership gains represent little more than transfer growth. -Elmer G.
