Revival in the home & rebellious children

S
sonofadam777 Oct 20, 2008

Has anybody on the forum ever had a rebellious child (15 yrs old) and had any success winning the heart of their child and turned their hearts back to God?

How can a family have a revival in the home and take back what the enemy has destroyed in a child?

thoughts?

sermonindex Oct 20, 2008

Prayer prayer prayer prayer... and then some more prayer. And when you're done with that... more prayer.

Dont really have enough info from you to give you the best opinion. Some people think a kid not making is bed is rebellion, while in other cases the child is completely out of control and spitting in his parents' faces.

Is your child in the public school system?

We started family devotions a while back after I experienced a personal revival thanks to godly preaching I sourced from SI. My 15 year old daughter gave up listening to rock music and changed her way of dressing. Last year she got baptized in water, we are still waiting for her to be baptized in the Spirit.
That came at a cost for her. She has hardly any friends her age in the faith; they are far and few in between.

Stop waiting... she received the Holy Spirit when she was saved. You cant be saved and not have the Holy Spirit living within you. God doesnt hold back the Holy Spirit from His children.

This is off topic, if you wish to discuss this further lets start another thread. Be happy to chat more about it.

I have five kids and I do not count myself as a perfect parent but I have learned some things. The bible speaks of "the rod of correction" but I do not necessarily see this as a physical rod. Correction is the rod, whatever form the Lord leads you to use. The bible says that "My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge." I am not saying that this is the answer but I would encourage you to not suppose that your child or teenager understands and is rebelling anyway. Sure they are rebelling with or without knowledge but it could be they just need further instruction in an area or encouragement.

For instance your child might like christian rock music but maybe they have never been introduced to anything else. Alot of it has to do with training them. Alot of times were like calves from the stall and we do not know anything other than our stinky stall so it pays to listen to them and talk to them ALOT. That doesn't mean they won't rebel but it encourages them to choose the good. I realize I am speaking of non issues here but another example is our pediatrician would always tell us to allow them foods they like when they are young but also let them taste of other things like spinach even if they spit it out. Eventually they may acquire a taste for it.

This is a good principle here and we certainly cannot force them not to do certain things but we have to be wise as serpents harmless as doves. The enemy will try to work his way into their minds so we have to be just as diligent and even more so. As Charles Stanley says, you have to get them on your team, God's team. It's hard I know because were talking about our children but don't get preoccupied with the state they are in pray and know God is working. Just trust Him..

Alot of it is training. That word is so much different than teaching. We can't just teach them we have to train them. Expose them to good things so they will want to choose the good and hate the evil.

Just a suggestion...

There is a lot of wisdom in what Rebecca wrote.

I do think the Bible is speaking about a literal rod of correction, but each kid is different too... so some require more rod than others. A stern look will wilt my 3 yr old son. My 5 yr old son, on the other hand, seems to think that whatever the punishment may be... it's worth it. My older sons are different as well. You have to find what works. Takes time.

But what she just said about training, I agree with. This is why the public school is SOOOO detrimental to the raising of godly children. If your kids are in public school I urge everyone to do all you can to get them out. Sacrifice that 2nd income, buy a smaller house... whatever takes... get them into a godly environment. Whether that be homeschooling or private Christian school, God will guide into that decision. But get them out of the public schools.

Yea, I think the literal rod makes a huge impact for sure but like Krispy said, sometimes it just takes a look. If all else fails use the rod as the scripture says it won't kill them but may save their soul from hell. Just enough to draw tears though in my opinion.

Never do it in anger. If a parent can not control themselves then they have no business applying the rod. Thats for sure.

I know my limits, so what we've been doing since our oldest was young is he gets in trouble he gets sent to his room to wait... and wait... and eventually I come upstairs. The waiting is worse than the punishment, but it gives me a chance to cool off.

Yea, it's best to wait if your angry. The waiting is worse for the kids. My husband is a big guy and so just looking at him with the rod in his hand is half their punishment. You don't want to live with any regrets. Live with few regrets as possible.

I am not an expert in this area, but in reading this post and the answers, I began to weep as the precious memories came flooding back of my girls in their teens. It was a very hard time to say the least, BUT GOD is faithful and He is TRUTH...train up a child....I remember the fasting and the prayers and the tears, I kept silent for the most part otherwise the arguments that came were terrible...we raised the girls in a Godly home and with morals, standards, curfews, so on..

It was when my eldest turned 17 when it hit the hardest ...everyone else is doing it mom, even the CHURCH...she would say to me ..why can't I? I would say to her we are not everyone else...we will not go there or do that ... we were Assembly of God at the time ( we now meet in a home church since the churches in our area are seeker friendly)...not some cult, to rest assure you. I remember one morning in prayer so vivid, I said God where did my baby go? I don't even know this girl in my home...I just need a hug God to know that everything is going to be okay ....might seem silly to some but we are a very close family and hugs were so important and she stopped hugging or talking to us. I heard her yelling in her room about something and I proceeded down the hallway to check what was going on ...she started yelling at me and her sister over something I can't recall, but I do remember that I grabbed her and just held her by the shoulders ...I said I don't know who you are but you have to let my baby go in Jesus Name! ...Now we just stood there in shock at what came out of my mouth, but I knew it was a God moment, just having come from prayer. I began to weep and walked away from her.

That week was a silent one... but Praise God on that weekend she walked up to me not saying a word and gave me a silent hug...thats all it took I knew that everything was going to be okay ....God is so faithful...My husband and I continued to pray for our girls.

Ten years have gone by...she is now a wonderful Godly wife and mother to 3 beautiful children ...our grandbabies ... our youngest daughter lives at home, working full time and putting herself through college.

It was very hard, but like Krispy said PRAYER !!!

Thank you God that you have been faithful to keep that which we committed unto you until that day ...we serve a faithful GOD!

Oh yes, Assemblies of God, pray for us please. :-) Our oldest is 16, but she knows why she cannot breakdance, rap, do Halloween or dress in gothic clothing. She knows this is wrong and she has even confronted the pastor respectively about it herself as to why the youth leaders are dressed like demons and passing out Halloween candy among other things. We praise the Lord for it. We talk to our children daily about these things and were not sure exactly what were going to do about all of this just yet. We're seeking God and taking it one day at a time.

If you consider what missionary families go through it's kind of the same thing. This is our mission field and we get our fellowship at home for the most part but isn't it that way with just about any church?

I don't want to get off topic but I was just using this as an illustration that we go through many things in this life and it's all to God in prayer.

Dear Rebecca,

Yes, not to get off topic, but when the pastor holds a meeting and tells the congregation that his staff took a survey of the area and that the messages will no longer be on the topic of hell, the blood, the cross, but it was a new message of love and grace that covers all...except for tithes, we aren't covered there for some reason...tongue in cheek.

Seriously, the next Sunday the message was on the ten virgins, the 5 weren't wise they were selfish, for not sharing with the 5 foolish...and then the next Sunday we had a screen up and we were to start filling in the blanks as he preached...the ushers passed oy forms and pencils...mind you the congregation was around 2500 and we started seeing the Glory of God departing...

My husband and I were having to take most of a Sunday and do damage contol with our girls. we prayed and left.

Sorry, got off track of the post, but Please God have mercy in Judgment on California ...Please forgive us for trampling on the blood and your precious grace....

Amen, sister. I don't really think in a way this is off topic at all becuase this is what we are facing right now with our young people. We are having to deprogram them from the public school system and than again on Sunday. It's very tiring to stay on top of it all.

They say though that men think in a boxes and with women it's all like one big ball of wire where everything is connected. So the men will probably say I am off topic here so I'll leave this alone. :-)
