red cresent moon

Okay I'm alittle shaken up, but I'm 100% serious. My 7 yr old son and I were just sitting here in the living when he said "Mom look at the moon!" I looked and to my amazment it was a red cresent moon!! My son said he was scared just looking at it so I tried to reassure him with a search on the internet to show him that it was normal. I did not find any other images of a red cresent moon, but I did find out that the red cresent moon is the symbol of Islam! Has anyone else ever seen a red cresent moon before??

The moon is white here in the midwest. I have seen a red harvest moon before - it is red as it rises above the horizon, but I can not ever recall seeing a red cresent moon.

I have never seen a red crescent moon.

I just looked and the moon here in MS looks normal at this moment.

The color of the sky is determined by witch colors of light from the sun get scattered around the atmosphere(the air around the earth). When red light is scattered the sky looks red. When you look at the sky your eyes are sensing the light that is being scattered around the atmosphere. Blue light is normally scattered by the gases oxygen and nitrogen witch make up most of the atmosphere while red, yellow, and other mixtures of light like pink pases right through. However unlike the gases such as nitrogen and oxygen that do not scatter red and pink light, other particles such as water, pollution, and dust can and do scatter red and pink light making the sky look different shades of red or pink. So when the sun light has to pass though lots of pollution, dust, or water particles red and pink light can get scattered along with the blue making the sky look red or pink. This often happens when it is very polluted, when there is lots of water or dust in the air, or during the morning or dusk when sunlight passes though more of the atmosphere to reach us giving it more opportunities to scatter off of stuff in the air.

Red Sky + White Moon = Red Moon. Simple Answer. The reason why the moon is red from where you're looking at it has to do with the amount of pollution or dust in the upper atmosphere.

The orange and red tints that the Sun and Moon sometimes take on are caused by the particles in the Earth's atmosphere.

When light (or more specifically, packets of light called photons) from an astronomical object passes through the Earth's atmosphere, it scatters off of particles in the latter. It turns out that these particles like to scatter blue light more than they do red light; so "bluer" photons (those with shorter wavelengths) tend to get scattered, and "redder" photons (those with longer wavelengths) pass through. So, astronomical objects look redder from Earth than they would from space, because the redder wavelengths from the objects penetrate the atmosphere better than the bluer ones. Incidentally, this is why the sky is blue: blue light from the Sun is scattered in all directions on its way to the Earth.

But how does this explain the occasional redness of the Moon or the Sun? Your son may have noticed that they always occur when the Sun or Moon is close to the horizon. If you think about it, sunlight or moonlight must travel through the maximum amount of atmosphere to get to your eyes when the Sun or Moon is on the horizon (remember that that atmosphere is a sphere around the Earth). So, you expect *more* blue light to be scattered from Sunlight or Moonlight when the Sun or Moon is on the horizon than when it is, say, overhead; this makes the object look redder. In other words, the Sun or Moon tends to look orange or red when it is rising or setting because that's the time when the light has to travel through the most atmosphere to get to you. The effect is exacerbated when there are thin clouds in front or behind the Sun or Moon: the clouds themselves often glow bright pink as well, because they are so good at scattering blue light.

Notice the two thoughts are nearly identical.

One was written presumably during the ascent of a nation, while the other was written during the disintegration if that same nation. Yet they are promising the same things for the saint...namely that a man or woman who trusts in God will be as a tree planted by the waters. His or her character will be upright, there will be fruit in season, provision for their lives, and their souls will be drinking from the life that is in Christ and his word. This is in contrast to the heathen who thirst even when times are good...they are never happy or secure with anything. ...like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh.

I am so thankful for God's grace to me. How wonderful to know he provides for us. My soul has known discipline from God that not even prosperous times could protect me from, and prosperity in God that not even tragedy could take from me.

He knows we have fears and worries. Yet we have to remember that these villains are just men. And so God laughs at them when they boast of their evil plans. In Psalm 2:4 we read, "He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord has them in derision." And in Psalm 59:8 we read, "But Thou, O Yahweh, dost laugh at them; Thou dost hold in derision all nations."

It is sad and perhaps bewildering to see what is going on in our nation, but we are sturdy and fortunate as trees planted near streams in the desert my friends.

Thank you iansmith - I always wondered how that worked. So the harvest moon is made to appear even redder by the dust that is kicked up during harvest time.

Could it not be said that the light from the sun is the source of all color? Certainly light from the sun falling upon an object "brings out" the color of an object - would it not be true that if there was no light, all objects would be colorless? In other words, objects in and of themselves have no color - only properties necessary to display color?

I felt alittle silly this morning over my frantic post last night. I thank all of you who responded. I know there is a scientific explanation for the color, but it was a very stange sight to see. It was around 8:30pm, so the sky was completely black with this glowing slice of red in the sky.

I also appreciate what growingone said and I'm actually surprised that most didn't respond in similar fashion. I'm not one to read the sky or to look to the stars for answers, but I do have a trepidation in my spirit for the hour we're entering.

I know that God is in complete control and He warns us because He loves us and wants us to be prepared. Jerimiah warned for years and who listened? He did not say "pray for God to change His mind" Because the judgment was already issued. The Jews were going into captivity ready or not. Most were taken by surprise, but a fragment actually heeded the warning. And of the ones who received the prophet's warnings who could have actually been ready for what awaited them. We're not ready for what is coming.

I saw the same thing last night as well. I'm hoping it has nothing to do with a red moon rising over America due to the fact that today is election day. Let us hope and pray that it's simply something that can be answered scientifically.

While there may be a "scientific reason" for what you saw - make no mistake in thinking that God did not have you see it for a reason. While we are not to fear these things, He puts them before us for a reason. Be alert and watchful. Nothing happens by chance.

I know you're right, but there is the tendencey in my mind to say that I'm just overreacting. I know the urgency in my spirit and I know God is trying to wake up His sleepy bride to what is on the horizon. I don't fear what is coming, I just don't want to be caught off gaurd when it comes. I think the urgency, is not so much for America, but for the Bride in America. We are not ready!

He will make us ready - we must pray.

I have been praying all day, and there has been much sorrow mixed with a great amount of hope and joy. He is preparing His Bride - all we must do is keep our eyes trained upon Him - He will take care of the rest. We must remain peaceful so that we may rest in Him.

It is in the darkness that He will shine brightest.
