Anabaptist History Book - Looking for suggestions

Anabaptist History Book Suggestions

Theology aside, I enjoy reading Christian history; the good, the bad, and the ugly. While I have read several Anabaptist accounts found scattered across the Internet, and the portions dedicated to them in larger historical sets, I have yet to run across a single definitive volume that warrants purchase. Wait just a minute; you should know that I’m not looking for just any Anabaptist history book, but one that gives a thorough and exhaustive account, you know the big boring one that most people pass by. I know there are several good books out there that deliver the basics, please feel free to post them too; perhaps I will need to purchase more than one.

That is a good one that Greg (sermonindex) recommended to me.

I believe I read a book a while back called "The Fellowship of the Discontent" that documented 5 major individuals that were associated with the anabaptist movement. My church history professor in seminary recommended it.

And if you feel like spending a LOT of money, there is the "Mennonite Encyclopedia" published by Herald Press, Scottdale, PA. It is still available. It has been updated but I do not know anything about it. If you google "Mennonite Encyclopedia" you will find online sources for it. www.bookfinder.com also has them. It does have the boring and the fascinating.

You asked for books about Anabaptist History, I am going to digress from recommending a book and instead recommend an audio/DVD series done by Walter Beachy.

In April 2008 Walter Beachy presented a series titled "Anabaptist History Project" in twelve one hour segments. He is a former instructor of Anabaptist History at Rosedale Bible Institute, also a past president of the same institution; now occasionally teaches at Elnora Bible Institute. He is very personable and it is hard to not enjoy history when you hear him share his knowledge/insights. He is so good that some thought he needs to record it for posterity because he [i]is[/i] getting to be a tad bit old and he does have plenty to say. In this series he shares the good and the bad. And he is a wonderful story teller!
