[u]If[/u] it is the Shack book you can do a search here on SI as we have discussed some concerns about it. I have it and have read it. It takes place in a cabin in the mountains. My concerns are in the posts.

Anyone who loves God and wants a pure mind should not read this book. It's full of error. Remember what happened to Adam and Eve when they thought they needed to know something rather than feed on life....

this brings up a good point, that I want to see what everyone thinks about. Obviously, the use of scripture is appreciated.

What do you think about reading non-Christian writing or writing that is not sound. Should we read stuff like The Shack or The Purpose Driven Life or even a little more extreme like The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Should we educate ourselves on what is out there so we know how to defend against it, or should we not fill our mind with such perversions?

I believe we should read on a variety of subjects and be well-rounded and well educated, but are there things that we should just stay away from?

Again, scripture is appreciated. (Sorry Krispy, I don't want to change the topic of your thread. I was just thinking about this when I saw some of the comments regarding The Shack)

I don't think we should study satan's lies unless it is directly necessary to help someone else overcome them:

I started writing a long post, but then canceled it to make it short and simple.

Those Scriptures are refering to false TEACHERS, not a generalization of all fictional authors, whether Christian or not.

Also, just because someone is reading a book for enjoyment's sake, doesn't mean that they are studying satan's lies, or studying the false teacher's teachings as your quoted Scriptures imply.

While, he was a great basketball player... the book is another story. I haven't read it, and won't ever read it. I heard enough stuff about it that it didn't appeal to me. However, my wife read it and got a lot out of it. We did talk about it and some good came from the book, but I told her the number of things that were in it that didn't appeal to me and gave my reasons, even bringing Scipture into the conversation.

So, personally, I wouldn't recommend it, Krispy.

I've heard enough men of faith that I trust broadside this book, that I would avoid it like a plague. I haven't read it myself, but I haven't had to stick my hand into a furnace either to know that it would be a mistake.

I read about half.

This may seem dogmatic but I wonder why we feel the need to write fictional books to convey the message of the cross. What's wrong with just the Bible, it's been fine for thousands of years for conversion.

If people won't pick up the Bible should we really make up a fictional watered down story to try and rope them into church.

From what I remembered of the story there's nothing about sin or anything "offensive" in there. Which is why it's even selling well in the secular markets.

True, my post wasn't clear. I was referring to books such as The Purpose Driven Life which are falsely presented as having 'positive spiritual value', not to fiction for enjoyment's sake.

this is the first time i have responded to one of these threads but i totally agree that you should stay clear of this book. my cousins raved over the book but knowing the way the author portrayed The Holy Father as a overweight women no matter what her color should get the clue not to read this book i call it heresy!
