Wisdom from Proverbs on instruction

Proverbs is one of those books that you can read over and over again and keep learning from it. The theme of this post is something that I've often noticed in the book of Proverbs and wanted to compile together the verses that pertain to it. It may seem simple to do a post with just Scriptures but it is profoundly important that we be able to listen to advice, instruction, and correction and the Word of God is quick and powerful.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.


[b]Correction/Instruction[/b]

11My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
12For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. Proverbs 3:11-12

13Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Proverbs 4:13

12And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
13And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! Proverbs 5:12-13

23For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Proverbs 6:23

10Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. Proverbs 8:10-11

7He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

8Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

9Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. Proverbs 9:7-9

17He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth. Proverbs 10:17

1Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish. Proverbs 12:1

15The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise. Proverbs 12:15

A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. Proverbs 13:1

18Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured. Proverbs 13:18

5A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
10Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.
12A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.
31The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
32He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.
33The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. Proverbs 15:5, 10, 12, 31-33

22Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly. Proverbs 16:22

10A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool. Proverbs 17:10

20Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
25Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.
27Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge. Proverbs 19:20, 25, 27


11When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge. Proverbs 21:11

15Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. Proverbs 22:15

12Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
14Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. Proverbs 23:12-14

12As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. Proverbs 25:12

5Open rebuke is better than secret love.
6Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. Proverbs 27:5-6

23He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue. Proverbs 28:23

1He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
15The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. Proverbs 29:1, 15

[b]Wise[/b]

5A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsel. Proverbs 1:5

8The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall. Proverbs 10:8


[b]Wisdom[/b]

But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
30They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
33But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. Proverbs 1:25, 30, 33


[b]Fools[/b]

7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

9Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. Proverbs 23:9

4Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
5Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. Proverbs 26:4-5

8My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Proverbs 1:8

1Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
4He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Proverbs 4:1, 4

20My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Proverbs 6:20

1My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
2Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
3Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. Proverbs 7:1-3


22Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
25Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. Proverbs 23:22-25

I have done a similar compilation of Scriptures that interposes wisdom, the fear of the Lord, and life eternal. I put this together after reading [b]2 Corinthians 7[/b] and searching out what the Scripture says concerning the work of regeneration and how one comes to salvation and perseveres therein, I also added some extra verses since then. This is obviously neither exhaustive nor an intimate explication of regeneration but rather is specifically focusing upon the power of the word preached as it is blessed by the Holy Ghost.


[b]Romans 1
16.[/b] For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

[b]Romans 2
4.[/b] Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

[b]1 Peter 1
5.[/b] who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.


[b]2 Corinthians 7
8.[/b] For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it--for I see that that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while--
[b]9.[/b] I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us.
[b]10.[/b] For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
[b]11.[/b] For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter.
[b]12.[/b] So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the offender nor for the sake of the one offended, but that your earnestness on our behalf might be made known to you in the sight of God.


-- For the sorrow which God gives is the cause of salvation through a change of heart, in which there is no reason for grief
-- For grief according to God works repentance to salvation, never to be regretted
-- For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation
-- For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret
-- For godly sorrow worketh penitence to salvation not to be repented of

[b]2 Timothy 3
15.[/b] and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

[b]1)[/b] The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth, I hate.
[b]2)[/b] The fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom,

Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom
-- the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom --

[b]1)[/b] and to depart from evil is understanding
[b]2)[/b] Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
[b]3)[/b] By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
[b]4)[/b] a good understanding have all they that do his commandments
[b]5)[/b] And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
[b]6)[/b] Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy
[b]7)[/b] For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
[b]8)[/b] But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children.

[b]Psalms 34
