The press has a great power for evil. Infidel and immoral
writers are pouring forth a deluge of skepticism and vice,
which are depositing a pernicious and pestiferous slime
over the minds of the people.

Let it be imagined, if imagined it can be, what must be
the state of multitudes in this country, when millions of
pestiferous publications are annually going out among
the masses of our population. Let the minds of all
Christian people dwell upon . . .
the insult offered to God,
the ruin brought upon souls,
the injury done to morals, and
the mischief perpetrated in the nation,
by such a state of things!

These ungodly publications originate from Satan's
workshop, and reflect the scenes of that dreadful
laboratory of mental poison! These authors, printers,
publishers, booksellers, vendors, by myriads, are all
busy and indefatigable--to do what?
To destroy the Bible,
to corrupt the mind,
to pull down the cross,
to dethrone God,
to subvert true religion,
to turn man into a speaking brute,
to overturn all morality,
to poison the springs of domestic happiness,
to dissolve the ties of social order,
to involve our country in ruin!

Satan, and all his emissaries upon earth,
are in earnest in ruining men's souls!

We have an evil to contend with--
so gigantic in its strength,
so diffused in its influence all around us,
so infectious and malignant in its effects!

The enemy is coming in like a flood!

Infidelity and immorality are invading us!

The alarm bell must be rung!

(Editor's note. In 1848, when J. A. James wrote this
article, the press was the only media available. What
would he say today, with the deluge ungodly media
from Satan's workshop pouring into Christian
homes and minds!)

I agree with this post wholeheartedly. I for one have become most aware of his deception, distractions and out and out lies. With all the opportunity that God gives me, I intend expose his ways. God has His truth, satan counters it with lies. He's on my 'hit list'.

I am curently participating in a study put out by Dobson called 'The Truth Project'. I believe it is going to be very good. It is all about what your post claims.

The church has really fallen down in making known the devices of Satan. New converts find themselves in a mine field without any ability to detect where the mines are located or how to diffuse them - at least this is how it was for me. In fact, I was unaware that I was even in a minefield.

Additionally, the church's flat refusal to call sin, sin - has opened the doors for a myriad of pollutants to be poured forth by the enemy. Unless we are willing to shut off the valves for the inflow of this pollution, it is almost certain that we will be overtaken by the enemy - for there is little hope in standing against such a flood.

It is our choices that open, or close, the floodgates.

Very good thoughts. I have often thought of media in general as the flood that the enemy comes in. I would say that one of my absolutely favorite verses (in addition to Eph 3:21) is Philippians 4:8. I heard a preacher one time run the nightly news or the paper or any other daytime talk programs down through the list. If the media item is not subject favorably to this verse, then I don't care to watch, read or listen. Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind (okay, just one more favorite) We will be influenced by what we put into our minds. I have a friend that I believe God has done some wonderful works in, but he won't give up Fox, CNN, or the money channel. He is in constant fear and anxiety over what he hears. He also tries to find good preaching on his television, and has taken a liking to the Seventh Day Adventists because they are the only ones saying "stop sinning". I warned him of the dangers of false doctrines and that it won't end well. We finally had to part our working relationship as I was too close to his influences. Media is huge. Ravi Zacharia does some great teaching on the effects of media in culture, and how we are super saturated in it. Well thanks for the post, and if the enemy is coming in like a flood, will not the Lord raise up a standard against it? Ready?

There has been a fascinating article in the press here in the UK about the place of Christianity in the public realm. One article by Archbishop Sentamu has attracted over 200 comments (at time of this entry).

Something that has struck me is the level of vehemence of the comments by atheists and anti-christians. I've never really been hit by this in quite the same way - most would say Christianity is not something they'd be bothered about or a matter of choice etc. etc. (missing the point entirely..).

Many say that faith should be kept private, and suggest laws be put into place to make this the case. Not that there is freedom to 'observe faith' or whatever the PC term is, but that there is no freedom to let faith be expressed truly. So it's okay for me believe and trust in God, but not at all to let others about Him.

The days are drawing close when Christians will be UNABLE to LEGALLY evangelise or even worship outside of set buildings designated for the purpose. John 9:4. Tolerance, diversity, equality are being used to make this country a darker place. Will we we seeing a new breed of martyrs? I don't know. May God grant us the strength to stand if/when the time arrives.

Wherever I am in the world, my day begins with prayer. It was Dom Helder Camara, after Martin Luther, who said: 'I find these days that I am so busy I have to spend at least four hours each morning in prayer.'

While I cannot claim to have the discipline of Camara, I understand what he means.

Prayer is important. At its best, it ushers us into the very presence of God. We come before him in our frail humanity with our worries, hopes and fears as well as our requests.

Sometimes our prayer is silence, perhaps awed by the majestic and mystical nature of God, or perhaps because we have been silenced by the incomprehensible suffering of the innocent and we no longer know how or what to say.

In recent days, prayer has found its way into the headlines for other reasons altogether. . . .
