Keeping the Sabbath

HeartSong Apr 22, 2009

I realize that this subject has been covered here on Sermon Index, and if I recall correctly, the thread(s) went on and on and on. I read some of the posts, but it was like being at a tennis match, the ball went back and forth and back and forth and it seemed as if the game would never end.

However, last week I was on a short trip and was listening to Exodus, and was amazed to hear how God feels about the sabbath. He commands us to keep the sabbath at least three times in this one book and He says that those that do not will be put to death and that this commandment is for all time.

Exodus 31:13-15
Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

When I got home, I read the verses. For quite awhile now the Lord has shown me that He would not have me to work on Sunday's - but I now know that that was not sufficient - He wants a whole day dedicated to HIM.

So last Saturday was my first "Sabbath." It is clear by all of the things that the enemy did to try to force me, and trick me, into abandoning this effort, that this is a very important commandment.

It was a MOST blessed day. :-)

Heartsong,

After you have seen how long this has been discussed and how many times, why would you bring this up again tp share what you feel God has led you to do?

Heartsong,

I, too, saw the title of the thread and said, "Ah here we go ahead." But I see your heart in this and it is not to stir up trouble!

From reading your posts, I know you love the Lord but I just wanted to ask if you have ever studied and understand the New Covenant as opposed to the Old Covenant? (not the Old Testament)

Zac Poonen has several sermon series on this topic. I really couldn't find any New Covenant teachings on sermonindex (I know they are here but) they are not labeled like they are on CFC so I couldn't find them.

I've posted just a couple in case you haven't studied the topic.

The Better Covenant The last series in the list.

There are many sermon series that have the name New Covenant in it if you are interested in listening to anything else.

I was a believer for 28 years before I ever understood even a little bit of it! I still don't feel I understand it all but I thank the Lord for what He has allowed me to finally understand after all these years! now talk about freedom in the Spirit!

***I'm not trying to do away with what the Lord has shown you but I think it goes deeper than what meets the eye!!

(OH yes, I found another sermon there that I downloaded and will listen to today. It might help on the subject:)

The Law of Yahweh
Those who have the spirit of Christ will have the works of Christ.

If we have the spirit of Christ and "walk in it" then we fulfill the law of God. The spirit of Christ will by no means draw us away from it. When Jesus was teaching on the mount of olives, what he taught was well beyond the written law. We are not justified by the law but if you break the law you will loose salvation. What about murder, adultery etc? Can we do these things and retain our salvation? Certainly not. Jesus did not annul the law but he fulfilled it. If you are in him then you will also fulfill the law, by your new nature, the nature of Christ.

JeremYah 31:
31 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Yahweh:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, says Yahweh, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Yahweh: for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says Yahweh: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

The law of Yahweh is written on our hearts so it is not burdensome to us, It becomes our nature!

1st John 5:
1 ¶ Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loves the father loves the son.
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.
5 Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

We are not talking about laws concerning the cleansing / purification etc. as these laws have to do with forgiveness and reconciliation. Christ has accomplished all of these for us, we have been reconciled to God and our Brethren. “by his stripes we are healed”

John 13:34-35
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
35 By this will all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.

1St John 3:14-19
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brothers. He that does not love his brother remains in death.
15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16 By this we perceive the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother has need, and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwells the love of God in him?
18 My little children let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in works and in truth.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

The great commandment is to love Yahweh our God with all our heart, soul and strength. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself. and the rest is gravy.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Romans 8:
1 ¶ There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 ¶ And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that remains in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if you live after the flesh, you shall die: but if you through the Spirit do put to death the works of the body, you shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
=======================================

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The saint fulfills the Torah in that we walk well beyond the writing of the law when we walk in the spirit.

The unregenerated man will be judged by the law.

Matthew 5:
17 ¶ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
================================

We also observe the Sabbath of Yahweh. It was instituted right after creation not at the giving of the law as most suppose. In the levitical laws he required them to observe the Sabbath. Yes it has the effect of re-centering a busy life, it revitalizes both in spirit and the flesh. Those who neglect to observe God's holy rest do themselves, those around them and God a disservice.
============================================

I celebrate the Sabbath to honor God. I also celebrate Passover to honor what God did through Christ for us. I understand that Christ has and will fulfill all of these things for us. What we are doing is celebrating God's provision for us through Christ.

In all that we do we celebrate Jesus! Amen?

I think the New Testament is crystal clear on this subbject. Where does any of the apostles bother the Gentiles to keep the Sabbath? Sadly, even many of the holiness preacher of the 19th century preached keeping the Sabbath.

Colossians 2:16
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

Imagine you were a Christian slave during the time of the Roman empire. You would have to disobey your master to keep this OT commandmend.

I see it more of a privillege if we can dedicate one day a week to fellowship with the saints and hear God's word. In the OT 6 day was business and 1 day for God. Now it is 7 days a week for God.

The most Blessed part of this truth, is even as you said "He wants the whole day dedicated to HIM."

Also, as I am sure you already know, most believers on SI do not presently hold to *this truth of scripture, thus, I say that to say, please feel free to PM me if you wish to talk with someone who is of the same mind pertaining to this topic on this site.

The Law of God is fullfilled in us THROUGH Christ... not through what we do.

There is nothing wrong with devoting one day a week entirely to Him. I commend those who do that. But we must not do it feeling compelled to fulfill a law in order to make God happy with us.

That would legalism.

Krispy, beloved brother :-) , it wouldn't be legalism if one believed that this was what God required of him through faith in Christ(and NOT himself) in obedience to God, through the Spirit of Christ.

Also, the Bible never says that Christ fulfilled the Law FOR US, Christ just simply stated that he came NOT to destroy, but to fulfill.

The Bible says Love is the fulfillment of the Law, and when Christ came he certainly did Love God the Father.......but he also kept the Law of God in Love to the Father, in which he said:

If ye love me, keep my commandments-which was a reiteration of the end of the 3rd Commandment.

sermonindex Apr 22, 2009

Also, the Bible never says that Christ fulfilled the Law FOR US, Christ just simply stated that he came NOT to destroy, but to fulfill.

Dear friend, if Christ did not fulfill the Law for us, then we're still under the Law. Yet, don't you hear what the Law says?

Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen. (Deuteronomy 27:26).

The Law requires PERFECT obedience to ALL of its commands. An attempt to meet the demands of the Law but falling short of perfect obedience results in a CURSE. Yet Christ came to take that curse upon himself and satisfied the demands of God's holy Law on our behalf, and now we are NO LONGER under the Law:

"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith." (Galatians 3:13-14).

"For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth." (Romans 10:4).

"Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster." (Galatians 3:24-25).

"Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labor in vain." (Galatians 4:10-11).

No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved." (Matthew 9:16-17).

WE ARE UNDER AN ENTIRELY NEW COVENANT, PURCHASED BY THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST. YOU CAN'T MIX THE TWO COVENANTS TOGETHER OR YOU DESTROY BOTH. THE OLD COVENANT HAS PASSED AWAY.

"In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away." (Hebrews 8:13).

Mingling Law with Grace is the exact heresy that Paul called "Another Gospel" in Galatians 1. Upon it the New Covenant pronounces a thundering "Anathema!". Observing the ordinances of the Law is NOT the Gospel.

"Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." 2Cor3:17

Are some of you arguing about keeping one day in seven for the Lord? As His children, we should be available to rest in Him seven days a week. Concerning the Sabbath, isn't this a matter of the spirit of the law as opposed to the letter? Didn't Christ demonstrate that all should be under the law of love? Are not grace and liberty ours through Christ? Our lives as we live under the law of love should abound in glory!!

I am challenged that for the Christian, the Law is no longer about the outer man, but the inner man. Does not God circumcise the heart of the believer to make him sensitive to the direction of the Spirit who operates out of the love of God? Does He not write his law upon our hearts?

If anything, our sabbaths should increase. We should see our rest as in Christ every single day. Instead of just "doing what is required" we should increase it to the max! Instead of going one mile, we go two. Instead of giving a tithe, we give an offering beyond what is required.

This is where faith and love meet. We love God with our entire being. We trust God to supply our needs, and we become freer with our resources, including our days and hours--it is all His, after all.

Why argue about the Sabbath? Why not ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to keep it in a spirit of love and thus bring honor and glory to the Father? Jesus didn't come to abolish the Sabbath, but to fulfill it. Don't forget that the purpose of the establishment of the Sabbath was to remind us on a weekly basis that God made the world in six days, and on the seventh day He rested from all of His work. The day was marked to bring this to our rememberance, and it has now faded into just another day. By it, God also showed the importance of rest in a cycle of work. I am surprised by the often hostile spirits of believers toward this day. These are my thoughts for those who would care to read them.

I thank God for His perfect law, and that through His Son, it was kept and demonstrated. And by His perfect keeping of it, He was worthy to be my substitute! Thank you, Jesus! "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Consequently, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." Mark 2:27-28

How wonderful that every believer can rest in Jesus at all times. Jesus demonstrated that the Sabbath was given to man, not man to the Sabbath. Then He gave His all for us. Jesus Christ is our Sabbath. In Him we rest from our dead works. Praise His Holy Name. Heb4:10

I'm uncertain what you are saying "The Law of God is fullfilled in us THROUGH Christ... not through what we do." Are you saying that we may walk contrary to the commands of God?? If so then what would constitute sin?

Remember that God promised that in the new covenant he would write (his law) on our hearts? Why would he do that if he did not intend forus to keep them???

"Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labor in vain." (Galatians 4:10-11).

Note: This is an expository on Gal 4:9-10 that explains why apostle Paul is not referring to the Holy Sabbath Day of the Lord, when he says " ye observe days....."etc

Galatians 4:9-10 9But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? 10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

The common, traditional explanation of Galatians 4:9-10 is that Paul is reprimanding the Galatians for returning to Old Testament observances that were a form of "bondage." Insisting that Paul taught that the Old Testament law was "done away" (Colossians 2:14), they conclude that Christians should not keep the days that God had commanded Israel to keep. In verse 10, Paul mentions observances of "days and months and seasons and years." Some contend that these observances refer to God's Sabbath and holy days commanded in the Old Testament. But this interpretation overlooks many foundational points.

Galatia was not a city but a province in Asia Minor. The church membership was undoubtedly composed mainly of Gentiles, and the males were physically uncircumcised (Galatians 5:2; 6:12-13). In looking at Paul's initial dealings with these people, we find that they had a history of worshipping pagan deities. In Lystra, a city in Galatia, God healed a crippled man through Paul (Acts 14:8-18). The people of the area were so astonished at this miracle that they supposed Barnabas and Paul, whom they called Zeus and Hermes (verse 12), to be pagan gods! They wanted to sacrifice to them, and would have, if the apostles had not stopped them (verses 13-18). This shows that the people in Galatia were generally superstitious and worshipped pagan deities.

The major theme of the Galatian epistle is to put them "back on the track" because someone had been teaching "a different gospel," a perversion of the gospel of Christ (Galatians 1:6-7). The Galatians had derailed on their understanding of how sinners are justified. False teachers in Galatia taught that one was justified by doing physical works of some kind. The majority of evidence indicates that the false teachers were teaching a blend of Judaism and Gnosticism. The philosophy of Gnosticism taught that everything physical was evil, and that people could attain a higher spiritual understanding through effort. It was the type of philosophy that its adherents thought could be used to enhance or improve anyone's religion. In Paul's letter to the Colossians, we read of this same philosophy having an influence on the church there. It was characterized by strict legalism, a "taste not, touch not" attitude, neglect of the body, worship of angels, and a false humility (Colossians 2:18-23).

What, then, were the "days, months, seasons and years" that Paul criticizes the Galatians for observing? First, Paul nowhere in the entire letter mentions God's holy days. Second, the apostle would never refer to holy days that God instituted as "weak and beggarly elements." He honored and revered God's law (Romans 7:12, 14, 16). Besides, he taught the Corinthians to observe Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread (I Corinthians 5:7-8), and he kept the Sabbath and holy days himself (Acts 16:13; 18:21; 20:6; I Corinthians 16:8).

When the scriptures in question are put into context, the explanation of what these days were becomes clear. In Galatians 4:1-5, Paul draws an analogy in which he likens the Jew to a child who is waiting to come into an inheritance and the Gentile to a slave in the same household. He explains how, before the coming of Christ, the spiritual state of the Jew was no different from the Gentile because neither had had their sins forgiven nor had they received God's Spirit. Prior to the coming of Christ, both Jews and Gentiles were "in bondage under the elements of THE WORLD" (verse 3).

The word "elements" is the Greek stoicheion, which means any first thing or principal. "In bondage under the elements of the world" refers to the fact that the unconverted mind is subject to the influence of Satan and his demons, the rulers of this world and the authors of all idolatrous worship. Satan and his demons are the origin, the underlying cause, of the evil ways of this world, and all unconverted humans are under their sway. "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be" (Romans 8:7). Paul is saying that both Jews and Gentiles had been in bondage to sin.

In Galatians 4:8, Paul brings up the subject of the idolatry and paganism that they had participated in before their conversion. "But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods." This obviously refers to the worship of pagan deities (Acts 14:8-18). He is making it clear that God had called them out of that way of life. Paul continues this thought in verse 9, where his obvious concern was that the Galatians were returning to the way of life from which God had called them. The "weak and beggarly elements" were demon-inspired, idolatrous practices, NOT something God had commanded. "Elements" here is the same word, stoicheion, translated "elements" in verse 3. An extension of stoicheion can refer to the heavenly bodies that regulate the calendar and are associated with pagan festivals. The apostle condemns the practices and way of life that had been inspired by Satan and his demons, the principal cause of all the world's evil. Paul recognized that the Galatians had begun to return to their former slavish, sinful practices.

It is evident that the "days, months, seasons and years" Paul refers to in verse 10 were the pagan, idolatrous festivals and observances that the Galatian Gentiles had observed before their conversion. They could not possibly be God's holy days because these Gentiles had NEVER observed them before being called, nor would Paul ever call them "weak and beggerly." Rather, they were turning back to their old, heathen way of life that included keeping various superstitious holidays connected to the worship of pagan deities.

Far from doing away with God's holy seventh day Sabbath, these scriptures show that we should not be observing "days, months, seasons and years" that have their roots in paganism, such as Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, Halloween, and any other days that originated from the worship of pagan gods.

Earl L. Henn (1934-1997)
Does Paul Condemn Observing God's Holy Days?

Galatians 4:8-10

The "days and months and seasons and years" of verse 10 do not refer to God's holy days, but rather to pagan, Gentile holidays that the Galatians observed before conversion in service to "those which by nature are not gods," as verse 8 says.
This, in turn, reinforces our understanding of "the elements of the world" in verse 3. It clearly does not say "the elements of God." Just like in Colossians 2, the "elements of the world" are clearly identified as being demons—personal powers that are capable of being worshipped. We are not dealing with something from God. However, they are elements, foundations, of the world.

A second important facet is that verse 3 mentions being "in bondage," that is, we were enslaved to the elements of the world. Bondage suggests something difficult to be borne, of oppression, of captivity, of withholding liberty. Notice James 2:11-12:

For He [God] who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.

Consider this in relation to the bondage of Galatians 4:3. It puts these two concepts into direct opposition. There is a great difference between bondage and liberty; they are, in this sense, mutually exclusive. Galatians 4 is not talking about the law of God being a means of bondage.

Similarly, I John 5:3 says, "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome." Bondage is grievous, but keeping of God's law is not. Bondage gives a person difficulty, but keeping the commandments do not, for they are a law of liberty. Keeping God's commandments is freeing, liberating. It is not a burden. Love is never a burden but always supports, frees, and liberates.

It becomes very clear that the "elements of the world" and "bondage" of Galatians 4:3 do not refer to the law of God(Ten Commandments), nor does verse 10.

Judaism, though it was a very poor interpretation of God's Word, did at least have some basis in the Old Testament. When people read the book of Galatians and see all these references to "law" and "bondage," they immediately assume that Paul is speaking about Judaism. Indeed, Judaism is part of the picture, but not all of it. We can prove this from verse 9: "How is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements. . . ?" It would be about as close to blasphemy as one could get if a person—in this case, God's apostle—were to call something that God gave, intended to be good and liberating, "weak and beggarly" and tending to "bondage"!

Thus, the "days and months and seasons and years" is not something Paul wrote in reference to the law of God or even to Judaism. Instead, they are something apart from both of them.

Though Judaism is clearly within the context of Galatians, so also is pagan Gnosticism—which wormed its way into the church primarily through people in the area becoming members of the church, and through church members' contacts with friends outside of the church. We can tell from books like I, II, and III John that Gnosticism eventually grew to dominate the church of God in Asia Minor.

Galatians 4:8-10

Paul penned the book of Galatians because church members in Galatia were turning away from the true gospel and had embraced a false one (Galatians 1:6-7). Early on, Paul had to establish his credentials—that the gospel he preached did not have its source in any man, as Gnostic ideas do, but had come directly from Jesus Christ (verses 11-12). The Galatians were returning to the "weak and beggarly elements" (Galatians 4:9), referring to the demonism they had been involved in prior to their conversion (verse 8). The Gentile Galatians were observing certain days, months, seasons, and years that had nothing to do with God's holy days (verse 10), but were part of a system that elevated rites and ceremonies above the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, even while paying lip service to Christianity.

Paul addresses a philosophy that venerated the Torah—and went so far as to teach that one could be justified by works of the law—but also involved astrology and receiving revelations from angels (Galatians 1:8). Because of the belief that the spirit of a person was trying to get back to heaven, worship of angels and astrology was a common tenet of Gnosticism, since angels and the patterns of stars and planets were believed to hold keys to this spiritual journey. Contrary to popular assumption, Paul does not condemn God's law in Galatians but a corrupt system that was severely affecting the church. That Gnostic system happened to include an emphasis on the Old Covenant at the expense of Jesus Christ's life, death, and teachings. Thus, Paul is in no way referring to, or speaking of what God himself calls " his Holy day" Isa 58:13-17(The 7th day weekly Sabbath). Paul, being a jew, would in no wise call "weak and beggarly" what his LORD & God called " Holy". Besides this, the law of God are Commandments, not "elements"

Not that many years ago, I heard a Science program on the radio and the Scientists said that they conducted a major study and found that the human body performs best and cells rejuvenate better if humans take one day out of the week to REST.

They FINALLY caught up with THE WORD OF GOD - Again.
