Accountability: A Gluttony Perspective

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, KJV:“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth: for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have head: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”This is so true to this devotional for today. It so helps us all if we have an accountability partner, someone who loves us and will be honest with us. A person that has a true heart for the Lord and isn’t self-reliant or self-gratifying. Someone whose heart is God-reliant and God glorifying. Someone full of integrity and can stand firm with us and let us know when we do fall. When you find someone like that, you will find that you’ll not only have a heavenly partner but an earthly one as well. God speaks to us through others; all we have to do is heed the voice and the circumstance.I implore you today, if you haven’t an accountability partner, you are alone in your plight, when you fall no one will be there to lift you up. Jesus Christ is an excellent accountability partner, but having someone on this earth is an added benefit. Paul told all his churches that they all should be of one mind and one heart, to be unified. If we confess our faults to one another, we will have healing and restoration. This is the purpose of an accountability partner.You will find success and victory in Jesus Christ, who sets us free from all captivity to gluttony and idolatry. A threefold (Jesus Christ, Accountability Partner, and You) cord is not quickly broken. You will find victory and you will not be alone. Jesus Christ is there always for us, but if we have an accountability partner we will have Him thrice for He is through all and in all!

Hey...I completely agree. I live in a Bible College dorm and it is a huge issue here. The dean is always stressing accountability. We all need it.

Jesus Christ is an excellent accountability partner, but having someone on this earth is an added benefitI believe you're quite right in this. It's such a comfort to have a person with whom you can share your walk with God. Someone with whom you can pray, with whom you can read the bible, for whom you can pray and who lifts you up with words of God when you're down.But, even if this were great, I don't think we should depend on our godly friends and not even on our godly husband. If the "health" of my relationship with God depends on the fellowship with godly men, rather then God alone...somethings wrong.I myself have had periods in which I had no one to rely on (except my parents and brother). I only had Jesus. But in those moments we learn that our relationship with Him doesn't depend on relationships with others. You see, God gave the Church to equip the Christians to glorify God (Ephesians 4). God stresses the importance and blessing of being with people who glorify God. We need good teachers, shepherds and godly men...but sometimes there are no such men around. I thank the Lord that He said in the Bible in John 6:45 "And they shall all be taught by God" and in 1 John 2:27 "But the anointing which ye have received from Him abideth in you, and ye have no need that any man teach you".I thank the Lord Jesus that He teaches me and learns me and gives me a close communion with Him, as I have opened eyes to meet other fellow Christians. Here at SI I meet such people, just awesome.The moments that we're abandoned by men, like Jesus was when He got arrested, are given so that we should put our trust in God alone. "All the disciples forsook Him and fled" (Matthew 26:56). They're granted by Him so that we will be able to confess: "Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside Thee." (Psalm 73:25)Spurgeon wrote something about this:"The wife often saith, "I love the Lord, but if my husband died, where would be my dependence?" What! hast thou buttressed the almighty even with a husband's love? Trust thou in him, and make him thine only consolation. He will supply thy needs out of the riches of his fullness. Oh we should not have half the trouble we have, if we learned to live wholly upon God. But we are so dependent upon creatures; we get leaning one on another; and our dear friend, into whose ear we have told our tale of misery, seems to be quite necessary to our existence.
