Possibility of Offence (John 6:52)
"The possibility of offence can only come when two persons have somewhat the same nature. People who have no affinity with Jesus run no risk of being offended with Him; but no Christian is ever free from that possibility (cf. Matthew 11:6). Satan comes to us with suggestions—“Surely God would never ask you to do such and such a thing? God would never guide you in such a way?” But God does. The possibility of offence is there immediately I become a child of God."
The Perversity of the Offended (John 6:60-61)
"Perversity means to turn away from one to whom I have been devoted because he says things that do not suit my ideas. There is a stage in spiritual experience; it may be before or after sanctification, when this perversity is possible. Someone comes with an exposition of a truth of God I have never realised before and at once the possibility of perversity is awakened and I say, “No, I am sure God would never have revealed this truth to you if He has not revealed it to me.” The possibility of offence is always there, and perversity is the next step. As soon as I am offended I become perverse, my eyes are blinded and I see only along the line of my prejudices. There are saints, for instance, who resolutely shut their minds against the truth that they can draw upon the Lord’s life for their bodies, or against the need for being continually renewed in their minds.† This will lead not only to stagnation spiritually but to perversity.
