Jehovahs Witnesses and Christianity

I work with a Jehovah's Witness. I'm a strong Christian but the fact of the matter is, I don't know a whole lot about what he believes in. My stepdad was a Jehovah's Witness too, but I never really looked into it until I saw the look on peoples faces when I told them about him. I looked into it but never found anything really seriously disturbing. What exactly does he believe in and how, if God leads me to doing so, do I go about talking with him about Christianity? Thanks!

I, unfortunately, live about a 10 minute walk away from a kingdom hall, so we get a call from them about 3 times a year.

Basically, they don't believe in the Trinity, or that God is triune if you prefer.

They do not believe that Jesus and God are one and the same.

They don't believe in hell. Although, the last time I spoke to a JW, they said the lake of fire was for the devil and bad people.

So, they are getting close!

They said they don't believe a loving God would create such a place as hell.

I said, I don't care what you believe, I believe what the Bible says, because we will be judged by it.

They also believe that once you die, that is it, heaven is full, and there is no hell, you just stay in the grave.

I asked them if the grave is the end, why does the Bible say it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment? How can you be judged after you are dead?

Source material is generally best as it allows them to speak for themselves - In a case like the JW's however the disassembling of their own information is more important, especially their history. They are a cult that manipulates and controls the minds of their adherents. So for starters their own 'official' site -

We have talked with them often. Now when they come around they do not linger much because they know it is useless for them to engage us in a meaningful conversation.

This is what we have learned from experience: if you get them up against the wall, they will return to their Kingdom Hall and discuss it and figure out how they can best answer the objections they hear during their witnessing route. Then when they come by the next time and you say something again, they will have a fine answer, one you know that came from a session of brain-storming. They are masters at manipulation. Unless you know exactly how their thinking process works, you do well to not engage them in a theological discussion.

The ones we have talked to are very sincere folks, and good folks. Actually, it is easy to like them! Be kind to them but keep your distance theologically, if possible, until you know what you are dealing with. They are deceived and once they discover they have been had, they will need someone who can give them direction and this may be you!
