Why is it some areas there are no churches and in others there are lots ?

I have just come back from Luz, Luz means light in Portuguese. If anyone knows who Maddy McCain, she was stolen away from the this town!
What I find shocking is that in this area there is no church but the church of England and the catholic church!
No saving light in a city which is called light!
Yet in many towns and cities in America and Great Britain there are so many churches.
I know many people on here struggle finding a bible believing church even in the States as church become businesses rather than churches!
