Jackie Pullinger: An Usher for Jesus

R
roadsign Jul 23, 2009

Has anyone heard the feature sermon by Jackie Pullinger? To me her messages are humbling and encouraging - especialy this one: "God Uses the Foolish Things"

A few more thoughts about Jackie Pullinger:

In her autobiography, “Chasing the Dragon”, I see Miss Pullinger as an Usher for Jesus. Her goal was to usher sinners into the presence of Christ. She said:

“My mission is to show the walled people who Christ was. If they cannot understand words about Jesus, then we should show them what he was like by the way we lived.” JP 53

And that is just what she did - by God's grace.

I see Miss Pullinger as an excellent model of a Christian leader: She portrayed a pastor’s heart in the way she worked with the people - some the most despicable sinners on the face of the earth.

PS Here is a summery of the book, found on the back cover:

Inside the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong squats the Walled City. It is a haven for drug smuggling and illegal gambling. Prostitution, pornography and heroin addicts flourish. Thirty thousand, maybe twice that live in a few cramped acres.

When Jackie Pullinger set out from England (at 20 yo) she had no ideas that God was calling her to the Walled City. Yet, as she spoke of Jesus Christ, brutal Triad gangsters were converted, prostitutes quit, and Jackie discovered a new treatment for drug addiction: the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

May God send many such leaders into the church of our own culture – those, like her, who are willing to die for their flocks – and be a fool for Jesus’ sake.
