LORD OF ALL BEING
by: Oliver W. Holmes

Lord of all being, thronèd afar,
Thy glory flames from sun and star;
Center and soul of every sphere,
Yet to each loving heart how near!

Sun of our life, Thy quickening ray,
Sheds on our path the glow of day;
Star of our hope, Thy softened light
Cheers the long watches of the night.

Our midnight is Thy smile withdrawn;
Our noontide is Thy gracious dawn;
Our rainbow arch, Thy mercy’s sign;
All, save the clouds of sin, are Thine.

Lord of all life, below, above,
Whose light is truth, whose warmth is love,
Before Thy ever blazing throne
We ask no luster of our own.

Grant us Thy truth to make us free,
And kindling hearts that burn for Thee,
Till all Thy living altars claim
One holy light, one heavenly flame.

Grant us Thy truth to make us free,
And kindling hearts that burn for Thee

Oh how these men of old where not satisfied with simply correct doctrine and thoughts about God. They passionately wanted to know God! That was everything to them.

Help my heart to burn for Thee, O Lord!

Oh the ecstasy of having His love poured down upon us. Oh the joy of being wrapped in the cleansing freshness of His touch. Oh the wonder of the intimacy that He shows forth to all that are His.

How could anyone be content with anything less than all that He is.

Oh Love Eternal,
Light of my life,
Keep me safe from worry and strife.

That I may forever,
with Thee abide.
Safe in Thy arms till even-tide.

We used to sing it to this tune, which I've found, but am sorry I can't remember it's name. It was my parents' favourite hymn, (along with 'O love that wilt not let me go'), which they often sang with each other on long car journeys. It certainly made me wonder about a God who could draw someone to write such words.
