Modesty

Why do some christian's believe in biblcal modesty, but think it's ok to go swimming in a swimming costume? How do you seperate the two?

Why don't you ask a woman who does this and see what answer you get? I would like to know, too. (Actually, as a female I [i]think[/i] I know.)

I am not really sure that I can answer your question on why some woman who say they practice modesty choose to wear swim suits that are so revealing. I do not go swimming so its not an issue for me, but if I did I would go when it was a woman only session and I would be sure to wear a modest swim wear. Maybe it is there desire to fit in with others who are wearing that latest swim wear trends, or perhaps they really do want to draw attention to themselves? I was thinking about this and I was wondering though if the Bible gives us a clear definition of what modest clothing is? I know to some Christian women wearing pants, or short sleeve shirts is considered to be immodest. I have also had some sisters share that a woman should wear only clothes that are loose and that they should not wear v shaped or scooped necklines even if you do have another shirt underneath(dressing in layers) because it still draws the attention to the top area of a womans body and is not modest??

Anyone have any thoughts?

Maybe the women you see are 1) not really saved, 2) saved, but rebelling because they want to hold on to their “right” to wear what they want and think it’s the male’s responsibility to practice godly restraint, or maybe they 3) just haven’t been brought under conviction in that area yet.

I have shared the following testimony before. There was a time that I was soundly saved and wanted to serve the LORD with all my heart. As far as I knew, I was obeying Him in every area I could think of and to please Him by walking with Him in holiness was my greatest desire. Yet, you could frequently find me at the local pool in a bikini. I had no idea I might be grieving the Holy Spirit or causing a brother to stumble or sin. If I had known, I assure you, I would have covered myself faster than lightning. The church we belonged to at the time did not preach modesty, per se, but I am sure I had read all those verses several times. I guess they just hadn’t “sunken in”. In His time, the LORD JESUS showed me what it meant to dress modestly. Upon that realization, it was no struggle at all for me to surrender in that area, as His commandments are not grievous (1 John 5:3).

I love what I heard in a message yesterday by Zac Poonen entitled, “The Dangers of Pharisaisim”. He stated something like this, “This is holiness: to see a Christian not dressed according to your standards and think, ‘perhaps under that clothing is a brother or sister whose heart is more humble than mine’. God gives grace to the humble.”

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the one found in Luke 7:37-47. I like to think God put it in the Bible just for me! It’s about the "woman in the city, which was a sinner: (KJV). I was just wondering about that woman. If she was so obviously a sinner, is it possible that the way she was dressed would have been an indication? Yet, I couldn’t find a place where Jesus told her to go change her clothes. He only said, “Thy sins are forgiven, thy faith has saved thee”, and “go in peace.” I guess, in His time, He taught her as He did me. Praise God for His mercy and grace! 
