A great testimony! I was a church member, saved, filled with the Spirit, and a worker in the church. But one day I realized something was missing. What I was living was nothing like the early church. And I started praying for God to show me what was wrong. Weeks passed, and I grew in despair. Then one night, as I was drifting off to sleep, crying to God,"Why won't You show me?" A voice spoke so loudly, " The sacrifice of Cain".

Now wide awake, I looked at my wife, still sleeping, and wondered how she still slept after that voice! I grabbed my bible and read the story of Cain's sacrifice and then was almost angry. What? This is it? I was expecting angels and lights and stuff. All I get is three words that don't make sense? Over the next couple weeks I kept chewing on those words. Then I realized God was telling me all I did, all I was, was unacceptable because of my heart. My heart? I tithe, speak in tongues, work with the different ministries within the church, pray and read my bible daily. I've got christian bumper stickers on my truck! And I made a terrible mistake. I asked Almighty God, " Well, what is so bad about me?"

God showed me. After each smaller event, I would emerge dirty and beat up, but still say, Hey, I'm a good christian, I kinda overcame that trial. Then one day I was working in the home of a homosexual. I didn't want to be there, didn't like being there, and to top it off, this guy was being a jerk. As he yammered at me, I was trying to finish my work, nodding my head to placate, in my mind I was thinking, I could hit this guy and he'd never even see it coming. All he'd hear is my fist on his jaw then his head hit the floor. I had no intention of doing it, but was just relieving the stress of the situation. When all of a sudden, a force deep inside me rose, and in my mind it was screaming, " Kill him! Kill him!" I could see him on the floor and me stomping his face in. I was fighting these forces of hell with all I had to keep from attacking him, then finally ran from the home and out to my truck. Once there, I looked up to heaven and cried out, God, where did that come from? And I mourned in my heart, because the night before I'd read 1 John and knew that if there was hatred in my heart, I was not of God.

All day long I mourned and prayed. Our church had a revival going on so in deep misery I went that night. I heard not one word that preacher said. At the alter call, I rushed to a quiet spot and prayed, " Lord, I don't know where that came from, but I'm asking you to give me the love of Jesus Christ in my life." I felt so ...clean. Joyful. Light, weightless.

I still didn't realize I hadn't been saved, but I knew now I was different. Sorry to be so long winded.

I was so ignorant then. I had no clue why I was different, I just knew I was. The next night I opened the bible to Jeremiah, a book I'd read before and thought boring. This time, the words burned in my heart like fire. Jeremiah 2:11-13, 2:21, 2:32 . I could feel His pain, and His anger.

I was raised in church, and my life as a Christian was defined by that church's teachings and doctrine. And by that doctrine, I believed I was filled with the Holy Ghost because I spoke in tongues, yet I was still filled with the lusts of the flesh and unrighteousness. I didn't realize I was filthy. I thought I was saved, but another spirit, another Jesus was who I was serving. And I didn't know.

When I was born again that night, I was different, a new creature in Christ. And I had to learn God as He is, not as I was taught. I believe the sinner's prayer has destroyed more lives than any vice, alcohol, drugs, etc. because we're taught that a simple prayer saves you. I believe now that there's a prayer of repentance, and then a turning away from sin. But I believe regeneration, the new birth happens later. For me, I grieved and prayed all day, but wasn't any different. But that night, when God washed me, put in me a new heart, and put His Spirit within me, I was different. All praise and glory to Him!
