Why do the seraphim veil their faces?

This is a powerful message (the one on the "feature sermon" on the holy presence of God).

At about minute 53 he begins to talk about the seraphim Isaiah saw, and why they covered their faces.

"Why did they cover their faces? They're.... with God."

I can't quite catch what he is saying. Can someone with a better ear than mine help me out?

I believe he is saying - "Why did they cover their faces? They are not equal with God. Only those that are equal with God can face God, face to face, without covering his face, and there is only one, and there is only one; Do you think Jesus covers His face when He comes into the presence of God? Holy, holy holy...."

I've thought about this for a long time. My own thought is that they veil their faces in deep humility. They veil their faces (Isa. 6.2) so as not to draw attention to themselves. Their whole interest-- the very reason they were created, actually--is to protect and guard the glory of the Lord. They themselves are glorious creatures, yet it would be unthinkable to them to display and seek their own glory (as Lucifer did). So they veil their own faces, and call one and all to behold the glory of the Lord. "Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is filled with His glory."

...And their feet. They veil their feet. HE is the one with the beautiful feet (Isa. 52.7). They don't draw attention to their own walk, they are not trying to catch the eyes of man, like the daughters of Zion did, "walking, and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet..." (Isa. 3.16).

And the wings, I would say, speak of a spiritual, a heavenly, provision. Wings are for the heavens. "With twain they did fly." The seraphim-- fiery ones-- live and walk in the Spirit. And with the power of the Spirit, they veil themselves in such a way as to cause all attention to be drawn, not to themselves, but to the Lord.

Are we to seek anything less ourselves, who are called to reveal the glory of the Lord in all His fulness?

A Disciple, I think you had it right in the first paragraph-I've never heard it explained so beautifully. As for covering their feet, I think it is because they are saying to the Lord by covering their feet, I go nowhere-I'd rather be in Your Presence than anywhere. I only go when and where You say. I do not walk my own path-but the one You lay out for me.

God help us to have this kind of reverence in ourselves..only by being in His presence will this kind of deep reverence be in us. Just reading this was enough to stir a deep ache in me...and make me want to cry. Thanks for this thread.

I know, I feel the same way. I've been reading that passage a lot lately (Isaiah 6). You just cry out for this. How we need to see Him! Nothing less than this will meet the hour we are now in.
