I have a few puritan writings at my home by bunyan, guthrie, owen, and gurnall and the one thing i notice from them is how deep they speak on holy living and i can see the holy spirit revealed so much to these men of God. I am shocked how so many few people speak of them today. I look at the review of their books and only a small few who have read them, wow, their books our so deep. You talk of living the christian life these men brought it down to the smallest minute point. I just pray that more will be able to see their writings and be blessed.

Amen. They are definitely worth the effort to read them. It's pretty difficult to go back to reading modern writers (even those considered good modern writers) after you have read the Puritans.

Honestly, unless you are dealing with a contemporary issue, there is probably little reason to read most modern writers. You can probably assume the Puritans covered the same topic with more depth and precision.

I am reading "All Things For Good" by Thomas Watson this week, and it is a total blessing. Offers a lot to think and pray about.

It's pretty difficult to go back to reading modern writers (even those considered good modern writers) after you have read the Puritans.

I find this to be true also. Although Puritanic writing may not be on every believer's spiritual palette, one thing that cannot be denied is the utter "purity" of their devotions. I've read copious amounts of the Puritans - and find each one to be special and unique. Some, like Watson, are known for gorgeous allegories and simplistic literary style; others, like Owen, are more verbose and thick and theologically-minded. Each one had a special purpose....and there are literally hundreds of them to discover. The Scottish divines such as Rutherford are particulary rich.

Once your spiritual diet becomes adapted to the Puritans, it kind of ruins it for anything modern. Like brother Taylor pointed out, very few modern writers are able to plumb the depths of what these giants have already reached. Arminian and Calvinistic brethren seem to be unanimous on this conviction.

i agree taylor, after reading them and people like spurgeon, murray, tozer, ravenhill, washer, wesley etc. i really don't have need for much else.

John Bunyan - The Acceptable Sacrifice. One of the best (puritan) writings ever. It is about a broken heart. I strongly recommend to read that book, its for free online.
