Just curious on what you think the definition of a 'peacemaker' and 'sons of God' is in this verse:
Mathew 5:9 'Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.'
We know that Jesus didn't come to bring peace but a sword...and who exactly are the sons of God?
The kingdom of GOD is a kingdom of righteousness
and peace. Righteousness rules and peace prevails.
the sons of GOD are those who are led by the Spirit
of GOD.
Peacemakers make peace:
1. Within themselves by growing in sanctification and suduing the power of sin in their lives, thereby being able to live more and more and more for God
2. Amongst other feuding or warring parties by helping to resolve conflict
3. By proclaiming the gospel and being agents through which God releases forgiveness real-time unto sinners thereby making peace between a just God and wicked people
They are called sons of God because they emulate Christ Who:
1. Was wholly at one with God within Himself
2. Did bring peace to situations, like when the adulteress women was going to be stoned
3. Through His Cross has made peace with God for all who believe in Him
The "I did not come to bring peace but a sword" passage is not an overall message for the ministry and Person of Christ. It must be interepeted in specific contexts. Christ did come to bring peace and a sword.
The apostle Paul had a ministry of reconciliation. Peacemakers are those who bring the Gospel to the world. That is the reason they will be persecuted for HIs name sake. You won't be truly persecuted for His name sake until you proclaim Him as God and proclaim His Gospel promises.
The only peace to be fundamentally concerned with is peace with God, all other fruits of peace come subservient to this first issue. Peacemakers are those who assist in bringing others into the Peace of Christ by being Christs hands and feet in this world. Not by bringing their own message and their own ideas of Peace, they bring Peace not through subjugation of a physical kingdom but by wielding a sword of a spiritual kingdom. That sword is the sword of the Spirit, and the armor is Ephesian. The church, and its members are not pictured wearing armor coincidentally in Ephesians, this is Hell Storming gear. When the Church and its members are suited up so to speak, then that sword is being used. It is the only sword of reconciliation, it is a sword that brings peace of the heart because it divides asunder the sinful from that which is to be reconciled to God. We are citizens, if the Spirit is in us, of the only kingdom existent, which is capable of actually accomplishing peace. This is why many today need to repent of so many false gospels, false ideas, false application. They are bearing not the sword of the Spirit, but more of an earthly sword...one that causes division, strife, ignorance, and has no capacity to damage a hell-gate whatsoever, for it is made more of something earthly in composition rather than something of Spirit.
Jesus reconciled the world...we are to bring people to that reconciliation. This is peacemaking supreme. The kingdoms of this world can choke on all the peace they promote, for it is peace without Christ, which is no peace at all...
Looking back at your question Santanna, I just realized that I had only really read your question about what being a peacemaker was, I had not even really paid attn to your question about the sword...but somehow my post was all about a sword, weird.

Sons are usually offspring that resemble their fathers in some fashion. Not often an identical likeness, but then again the moon is not like the sun, yet it nightly reminds us the sun is still there.
"...As to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts..." 2 Peter 1:19

I know that as a peacemaker, I got clobbered a lot.
From my own experience and observation, this seems to be the most difficult beatitude to observe.
The warring factions are not willing to make peace. Or, maybe only one faction is but not the other. Some folks just love to fight, or so it seems. They seem to get some sort of satisfaction of being at war with someone, something somewhere.
