"In the United States of America there is certainly a great awakening. No sane man living there could think of denying it. There may be something of spurious excitement mixed up with it, but that good, lasting good, has been accomplished, no rational man can deny. Two hundred and fifty thousand persons--that is a quarter of a million--profess to have been regenerated since December last, have made a profession of their faith, and have united themselves with different sections of God's church. The work still progresses, if anything, at a more rapid rate than before, and that which makes me believe the work to be genuine is just this--that the enemies of Christ's holy gospel are exceedingly wroth at it. When the devil roars at anything, you may rest assured there is some good in it. The devil is not like some dogs we know of; he never barks unless there is something to bark at. When Satan howls we may rest assured he is afraid his kingdom is in danger. Now this great work in America has been manifestly caused by the outpouring of the Spirit, for no one minister has been a leader in it. All the ministers of the gospel have co-operated in it, but none of them have stood in the van. God himself has been the leader of his own hosts. It began with a desire for prayer."

All the prayers offered in this nation in 1858 are still alive, still working, still powerful. May the work the Holy Spirit began in 1858 be revived in 2010.

Amen! Spurgeon is one of my favorites. I had never heard this before. I am so encouraged I am sending this to my relatives and friends and pray it will encourage them as well to pray and put their hope even more in our God of revival. It is so exciting to think of the prayers of so long ago are still alive and that we can add to those prayers with great expectations. I know two who have not been in Church for a long period of time, one I dont think ever, but yesterday, Sunday, they both went due to the earthquakes that have been happening and said they are going to continue to go. They live in Calif. Glory to God. He uses hardships to bring us to Himself. We love You Lord, we love You!!!

Thank you dear Brother. I will be using this in an Encouragement to Prayer along with newspaper headlines from across America in those days.

Do you have a reference or link. I like to give those and there may be more in that message. If possible to re-find.

I agree that the heart and the cry for revival is one heart and one dispirit cry. I agree with the Saints.

[edit] As I hit "submit" I heard from my heart "Revive thy work." That would be like Hab.3:2. O LORD, I have heard thy speech, [and] was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.
