Dear Justified,
I applaud your openness and honesty. I only wish I'd have had the courage to ask questions like that. I don't know if this part of my testimony will help you, but it's on my heart to share it with you.
When I got saved I had been under conviction for some time and I was desperate. I had to have Jesus, I had to know that my sins were forgiven. I was at that place in my life where I just couldn't live anymore without God. I was sick and tired of my sin and everything that went with it. I prayed the sinner's prayer kneeling in my livingroom floor along with a tv evangelist, but I didn't 'feel' saved, soooo...I prayed again (at least half a dozen times) confessing my sin and repenting of it and asking Jesus to save me. Finally, the Lord spoke to my heart, not audibly, but in my heart and He told me, "I said if you asked Me to forgive and save you, I would. You have asked Me to do it, now you have to believe that I did what I said I would do." I know that sounds so simple. I just said, "Okay, Lord. Thank You for saving me", and I got up. I didn't experience any overwhelming rush of emotion, just a simple 'knowing' in my heart, as soon as I said "Okay, Lord" and got up, that He'd saved me. I didn't realize it until later, but I received from that very instant deliverance from certain sins. (Another proof that something 'real' had happened to me.) But I have found that with other sins it is a growing process, a process of growing in grace and the knowledge of Christ through reading and studying God's Word with a willingness to obey and communicating with Him in prayer (2 Peter 3:18), of bringing my body under subjection (1 Corinthians 9:27) and of "bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5). I also knew in my heart that I needed to find a church to attend, which I did and was baptized. I was still very confused at times, especially during the first year or so after I was saved and horrible doubts would enter my mind about my salvation, but I clung to those words that the Lord had spoken to me like a life preserver.
During that very shaky time in my Christian walk, I had a very godly, loving and supportive Pastor and church family. Also, a minister who's writings and sermons have greatly helped and encouraged me for most of my Christian life is David Wilkerson. Though I've never met him personally, I respect him very much and highly recommend his Pulpit Series Newsletters (You can sign up to receive those free by mail approx. every three weeks. You can also read them online.) and his daily devotions via email (Also available on his website.). I've included links below. Some of his sermons are also posted on SI.
Justified, I don't know your heart, only God does, but from your post your struggle sounds very familiar and you seem very sincere. Please remember that while you and I are holding onto Jesus for dear life, HE is holding onto us (See John 10:27-30, Hebrews 10:23-25, Jude 1:24-25, Hebrews 12:1-4, Philippians 1:6, Psalm 37:23-24). If we are earnest and sincere, seeking Him with our whole heart, He will not let go of us and His Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Also, that truth will always line up with God's Word.
I tried to keep this short, but I think I've failed in that effort. I apologize. I will be praying for you.
A friend and sister in Christ,
Drema
P.S. Be patient...Just as babies don't become full grown adults overnight, we don't become fully mature Christians overnight, either...But we must continually "press toward the mark" (Philippians 3:12-14).
