Christians trained by Jesus and the apostles, "intolerant of the world's spirit and atmosphere"

But the Christians, so peculiarly "disfranchised of the world," so intolerant of the world's spirit and atmosphere, and standing out in such bold contrast and daring unworldliness, were stigmatized "the third race." The Christians willingly embraced this stigma. Anything was better than sin. "Let the heathen rave." Christians belonged to another world. They were "dead to all the globe"-- out of joint with all the world.

"Never had the Church so much influence over the world as when she had nothing to do with [being like, yoking to] the world."

Completely separated from that Roman world, those early Christians plunged back into that sunken Empire to lift it off its hinges and change the entire course of the world's history.

But in speaking of those early days, Tertullian wrote: "We engage in these conflicts as men whose very lives are not our own."

We should still be a third race.

Are we?

This was really awesome. I love that Christians embraced the stigma of being called a third race. That kind of love for Christ and desire to die to sin is not so embraced by much of what calls itself the church today. I pray that we would all have this same heart and desire for HIM and HIS Kingdom and be so dead to the things of this world!

There is an audio book here on this website called "The Martyrs of the Catacombs." If you guys have not listened to it yet I highly recommend it. I listened to the whole book 3 times. It is along the lines of this thread.

That writer has the ability to say a lot in a few words!

I find this piece so profound I am including it in our church bulletin for tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!
