So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

Faith is right response to grace. God's grace comes to us when He speaks to us or reveals His will to us. Therefor, faith is right response to revelation. Very simple. The bible speaks of the obedience of faith. What is it? It is what Abraham did. God made His will known to Abraham and Abraham responded rightly.

First, one must 'amen' God. That is, they must AGREE with God. Once we agree with God we must move according to what we agree with. This is what separates Christians from devils. Devils believe and tremble, but true Christians respond RIGHTLY to what they know concerning God.

Everyone is living their lives based upon some 'word.' Sarah suggested to Abraham that he take Hagar to fulfill the promise. This was NOT God's Word- it was Sarah's word. Abraham 'hearkened' to the voice of Sarah. The bible defines this behavior of hearkening to some 'word' other than God's as an act of The Flesh.

Wrong response to God's voice is sin. Right response is faith. This is the pattern of scripture. Trace it through Hebrews 11. In each case the person took possession of the thing God revealed so as to utterly believe it in the face of all odds. We cannot have faith UNLESS God has spoken. When we recognize it is Him, we must respond rightly to Him. To do otherwise is to resist Him.

believeing in what you cannot see. a baby knows its mother will feed it, it is dependent on its human mother, and in such an instance with God, Faith is knowing that we are totally dependent on God and to rest in that total utter dependency on Him.

Faith cannot be given by human words, it's a Gift, divinely imparted.

i know this is insufficient, but in the quiet of night watches, when all is still, may Faith flood your heart, i pray this in Jesus Name, that Divine Assurance be yours, which is a Gift to be treasured.

and then you can rest in Jesus' Love, which is a Good Place.

one of my prayers that the disciples uttered, was "Increase our faith!"

Hebrews 11

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Faith is the simple act of believing the invisible God when He speaks.

RobertW has it right. It's that simple.

Now, some people are not satisfied with the simple ABC's.

They want something they can feel, touch, and see. The Roman Catholic Church attracts thousands of people to it because they can feel it, touch it and see it. Their faith is wrapped in what they can see, which is not faith at all.

Heb 11:1-2 Now faith is a well-grounded assurance of that for which we hope, and a conviction of the reality of things which we do not see. For by it the saints of old won God's approval.

Trust is something which you believe in something and Faith is something which you think you believe in something.
Although the Christian faith is not based purely on evidence, it is definitely supported by evidence. Faith is not about turning off the brain and merely relying on the heart, or squashing reason in favor of emotion.
