We had a thread about this only a week or so back. I'm not exactly sure where it is, but maybe if you browse the doctrine section it should pop up. Give it a shot.

There was a thread a bit back. This is my take on this question. This verse gives pretty clear teaching on what it is, and this came from Jesus.

Mat 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

This was when they accused Him of working through the devil:

Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard [it], they said, This [fellow] doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast [them] out? therefore they shall be your judges.
28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
0 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
31 ¶ Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come.

It seems to me that this makes it very clear.

Hello fromtheold. Are you refering to Hebrews chapter 6? Or Matt 12:31?

F
fromtheold May 31, 2010

@Goldminer its not the clear actually because normal Christians have issues with this topic, hence the question.

Matthew 12:31

These verses clarify it further:

Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

fromtheoldthis is my understanding and maybe some can add to it. I will try to be brief for the purpose of clarity. I have been priviledged to hear many solid teachers of the scripture and one thread they all have in common is context. Any of the teachers I have known say when a person takes the word out of context it is dangerous ground. That being said in this passage Jesus is addressing the pharisees comment that Jesus casts out devils by being the ruler of devils. Many have said heinous things of the Lord in ignorance. From atheists to other religions to individuals like myself who were at one time lost in darkness. To speak evil of His majesty is one thing but to declare He Himself to be the ruler of darkness is quite another. To speak against the Holy Spirit by saying He is satan may be the epitome of sin. It supercedes doubt and unbelief infinitely. There is much more to be said about the way Jesus reproves their ignorance line upon line precept upon precept but I said I would be brief. To sum up they were not merely challenging Jesus teachings or authority but had crossed the line to say He was evil incarnate. I hope this helps. By the way some have said saying tongues is of the devil and have gone on to be filled with the Holy Ghost and speak in tongues more than us all. Saying such a thing is not blaspheming the Holy Ghost it is simply ignorance of a doctrine taught by a previous generation.

@youngsamuel

That is a interesting understanding of that particular scripture.

There is so much to this scripture that one can study it for years.

I would like to share my understanding of this scripture.

I believe the key to understanding Mat12:31 is this:

As you can see Mat12:31 starts with "wherefore". I dont know if anyone else usually refers to the greek if they try to get a deeper understanding of the scripture but i do.

The word "wherefore" is actually two words in greek, it means "through this" which is basically what wherefore meant in the time the bible was written (1611).

This means that 12:31 can not be taken to be on its own without considering what 12:30 says.

12:31 Can not be understood with keep the "gathering and scattering" in mind.

12:30 speaks about gathering or scattering, the pharisees earlier wanted to find a way to destroy Jesus. This can be taken up as "killing or hurting" or just destroying him.

I believe this is the context of this particular scripture.
The pharisees knew this was the son of God because and when the people proclaimed "Mat 12:23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. "

So the pharisees knew that Jesus was the "son of David" the one that was prophesied about.
When the people wanted to accept Him the pharisees then scattered them on purpose.

The Holy Spirit speaks through signs and wonders (as i understand it). The pharisees did not blaspheme the Holy Spirit but blasphemed against the Holy Spirit. While the Holy Spirit was speaking they spoke against what He was saying (because the Holy Spirit confirmed that Jesus is the son of God by working signs, miracles and wonders).

The pharisees therefore willfully and knowingly scattered the people from coming to Jesus.

That is why this is in Luke:

Luk 12:8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:
Luk 12:9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
Luk 12:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
Luk 12:11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
Luk 12:12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

I will write more about my understanding if anyone is interested.

Please debate about this topic so we can get more answers from each other and understand the scripture better. Iron sharpens Iron.

here is the scripture again to refer back to:

Mat 12:22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
Mat 12:23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
Mat 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
Mat 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
Mat 12:27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
Mat 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
Mat 12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
Mat 12:30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
Mat 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Mat 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
Mat 12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
Mat 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Mat 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
Mat 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Mat 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
