watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.--Matt. 25:13

"I remember," says a well known writer, "once living at a place where a large number of people were constantly employed in keeping the walks, grounds, and gardens in order. The proprietor was absent, and everything had a sleepy, slovenly look. But when tidings came that he would soon return, all became awake, earnest, and active. The pruning, the rolling, the weeding, the sweeping, went on amain; none rested till all was ready; and all were gratified by the look and word of approval, when the master came." And so, if we constantly remembered the words, "Ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh," we should feel it is not the time to sleep. It is a time for watchfulness, for earnest diligence and unceasing activity. The time is short, and the day of the Lord's return is close at hand. "What i say unto you," said our Lord to His disciples, "I say unto all, Watch" (Mark 13:37). The disciple who lives in the spirit of watchfulness will meditate on his Master's word, will live in the Master's presence...doing his Master's will.
