Can we pray to "bind Satan"?

S
Silo Jun 21, 2010

I'm a little confused when Christians pray something like, "Satan...we bind you in the name of Jesus."

I guess I pray it to now but can someone clarify on what this exactly means. And it is it the same thing as

James 4:7

I believe the phrase is taken from the scripture in Matthew 16v19.

However, in Jude v9, it tells us the archangel Michael said, 'The Lord rebuke you'

That's all I'm going to say on this subject for now.

So I guess if were praying it in the name of the Lord and reckognizing it's God, then it's fine.

I guess it's just different lingo we all use but as long as we believe God binds satan and we just use the word to emphasize it or repeat it.

For the believer, Satan was bound at the Cross. We have the whole armour of God, Jesus Christ. He is like our coat of many colors, but we have to put it on for it to become effective.

Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Ephesians 6:10-16 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Where is our strength? "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."

We have it, don't bind satan by prayer, Put it on, by Faith and His, the might of Jesus Christ rebirthed in us, this is the ability to stand against the "wiles of the devil".

IN,IN,IN,IN,IN, for ever as the Holy Spirit is in us also and the Father. Satan has no effect over this kind of Faith. Satan must flee. In Christ, Phillip

I would caution you to not pray things if you don't know what they mean.

If we are going to pray to bind Satan, when is it that we tell God it is OK to unbind him?

We resist the devil by standing firm
on the Word of GOD and holding fast
to His Promises. Our authority comes
from our standing and position in
Christ; our victory comes from faith
in HIM!!

i think the phrase has been misused a lot, and many may misunderstand and interpret it differently what it means.

Myself do not use those words, but i meet people i consider walk much closer to the Lord then me pray this. But i think our hearts may have the same longing/desire to see God move in a certain way but we utter it different, the word says we are not unaware of his schemes, it does not say we should pray exactly those words, but we know what he is up to and we pray for Gods will in a specific situation, and some situations we know satan is against, so we pray to "bind" him, hinder him or we may use words like "do this Lord" or "move Lord" or similar. Why i think many "react" to the phrase is when we see these "preachers" on tv praying this on their shows with all the things going on these shows.

We know God looks at the heart in prayer, some may stutter and have a hard time articulate what their hearts burden is, God will hear them. some may pray very theologically right and wonderfully articulate and God does nothing

I am sure we all prayed things that is no where to be found in scripture. Used words , phrases etc.

just some thoughts, prayer is a divinely burden put ina limited fleshly human heart trying to express eternal things in the limited way or words. Its not always easy to draw a line what is good or wrong.

Prayer is a mystery, we are commanded to pray, yet God is not dependent upon them, yet he promised he would hear our prayers and that he will act on them. Its wonderful!

i never have commanded or prayed to bind the adversary.

i have cast out demons before, and the binding thingy just seems so unneccessary. Isn't the authority we have been given by Jesus blood and the power of His name enough?

Why bind him when you can, through the authority vested in us by Jesus, just tell him to "git!"

For myself, it seems that resisting him is all that is neccessary: he runs.

ALL authority is in Jesus and not what is spoken, unless words are by His Holy Spirit's leading.

We have to remember that prayer is not magic, and that there are no special buzz words that do special things. After all, prayer itself does nothing, but God does. It is my conviction that binding and loosing isn't something done in prayer. I find no Scriptural evidence for this. Rather binding and loosing happens simply as we walk in the realities and authority of the kingdom of heaven. Such may include acts of prayer, but is not limited to such.

Saints,

I highly recommend listening to this sermon:

Here is an interesting thought. I wish it were my own, but it rang very true when I heard it.

There are times when someone might say, "We bind the Devil over this service and declare that He cannot come in here. We plead the blood over this room and declare that if Satan were able to come in here he would have to be a saved Devil because he cannot cross the blood-line.", or something very similar. Has anyone else ever heard this? Lets follow it through. If we can bind the Devil over a service or a room such as a church, then why not over a neighborhood? If over a neighborhood, why not over a city? If over a city, why not over a state? If a state, why not a nation, a continent, a planet, a universe? Do you see my point?

My guess is that demons show up at church services we have because people show up there. Why do people wrestle so hard sometimes with a decision to make Jesus the Lord of their life, to surrender an area of their life to Him, to obey when He asks something of us? Sometimes it is our flesh, but have you ever experienced temptation of some sort even in a church service that is awesomely anointed? And, some people come into a service demonized.

I believe a blanket statement like, "We bind Satan" is probably not effective or Biblical for that matter. What I do know is that through the Holy Spirit we have been given power over demons. We can cast them out of people provided the person in question desires them to go. God does not override our own will and we, operating under His delegated authority, cannot either.

For the believer, Satan was bound at the Cross.

More like defeated.

However, he was bound not too long after that. Today he is in the Lake of Fire.

I am going to take Enid's cue as well, that is all I am going to say on the matter.

Thanks Greg for that sermon link...and the others related, spoken through Mark Greening.

It seems something need be said about just what resisting entails... a little beyond just plain docility: humility not docility.

It is not becoming a sitting duck or a doormat for the devil.

In one of the synoptics--don't have a Bible here with me right now (think it's Luke), Jesus speaks of returning good for evil, the next incidents in the flow of the text indicate just what turning the other cheek entails.

John the Dunker, Jesus' cousin, is beheaded, and then in 'retaliation', Jesus turns the other cheek in ministering to those oppressed by the devil.

You wanna' make ole' sluefoot run? Return good for evil.

One of the most active characteristics of humility is meekness. You, akin to a bridled horse, bridled in God's will and purposes, exhibit meekness.

Meekness was Jesus driving the money changers from the Temple, as well.

...and this has nothing to do with compulsion to do 'good' things. We are commended to be perfect, not good.

Lowly of heart is encompassed in meekness.

How many times must God bind Satan for the believer? "Christin you"

Don't get me wrong, Satan does have power, and he can hurt you, if God allows it for our good. Otherwise, Satan cannot, he can only attack us by getting us to believe that he is able. We can give him power because we don't know who we are in Christ. Can Satan have power over Christ?

If I try to bind Satan, it is me who is doing it, my faith has become weak because "I" am trying to do God's work already done.

Galatians 2:16-21 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

If I seek to be justified by binding Satan, what have I become?

But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

So it is not I who binds Satan but Christ who is in me, this is who we are in Christ. This is how we pray and in this fashion, not by wrote repeating.

Matthew 6:6-13 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

This is not a physical closet, but the door to our hearts. Who is "knocking?.

Satan is bound from heaven and cast down. Only with permission from God can he do anything.

In Christ, This is who we must understand we are. Son's of God by the Only Begotten, us being re-begotten in Him.

Phillip
