BETA: possible bible module..I am possibly thinking of releasing a bible module on SI. I would love to get as much feedback as possible to see if this is a valid idea and what features people would like to have with this. I am not sure how many people go to sites like biblegateway.com, studylight.org and other online bible search sites. I think the intergration of audio conponents on SI could greatly help make it a good resource to have on this site. Here are some features I am thinking of having implimented:Simple bible search for passages and keywords-so if you plugged in haggai 1:3 that verse would come up. Or if you put in Jesus all the occourances of the word would show. It would be neat to have a highligh feature with that so the word would be highlighted on the verses that comes up. for the word search you would be able to have it restricted to single books or sections of the bible.Browsable section for browsing through the books of the bible-This would allow a person to click through the books of the bible and chapters. There will be a browseable 'navbar' where you can browse different books and chapters. Great idea,Detailed verse study -This will allow a person to drill right down to the single individual verse and see all the commentaries, audio sermons and others features avaliable on that certain passage.Just one concern with this, that there won't be a slant in the commentaries that are available. i.e. The whole range of ideas and thoughts from varied sources, not just from our favourites.

Also there will be a bible dictionary for those hard words, illustrations and other neat features.Hi GregDo you ever sleep? :-( I am trying to see how this would be different to what I already have in e-sword and have come to the conclusion that these last two bullet points are the most 'different'.As regards my own commentaries. 20 years ago I started this with the Online Bible but began to feel that its storage was a bit vulnerable. Since then I have used a specialist database balled 'Idealist'. It is very versatile but about as user friendly as a rabid rottweiller! e-sword already has a facility for your own commentary but as far as I know no facility for sharing them with a select user-group like SI. I am likewise cautious about commiting my own commentary to e-sword without assurances that I can get it out again for other purposes should I need them.The idea of teaming the commentary comments with audio files is great and your are the best placed in the whole world to do it!The one issue I have already with my e-sword etc is data-overload, but this is a problem endemic to the internet anyway.

Just one concern with this, that there won't be a slant in the commentaries that are available. i.e. The whole range of ideas and thoughts from varied sources, not just from our favourites.Yes I would like to try and get many different unique and in some cases not too well known commentaries for people to be blessed with at SI. I want to choose of the best and not have an exhaustive list of 20. I personally don't think it's needed for the site. There are already many such tools availble on the net, such as bible.crosswalk.com (my favorite). It has commentaries, many translations, concordinances, dictrionaries, lexicons, encyclopedia's, maps, etc Maybe you would be better off attempting to partner with one of those sites and somehow be able to integrate their stuff into this site.

And I will try and let you know what is and is not possible or rather feasable at this point. This is an important feature and I want to make it the best as possible if people are going to spend the time inputting alot of data in there. I don't get commission on it; its free anyway. But e-sword already has all these facilities with the exception of shared personal commentaries. It has maps and charts and timelines and functionality to include some key writings. I don't want to discourage you but as they say I don't want you to re-invent the wheel either.

I don't want to discourage you but as they say I don't want you to re-invent the wheel either.Absolutely I dont intend to re-create the wheel but use it how it is. Most of the materials are opensource and I think I can attain much of it in sql format which just means the coding has to be done to query the sql database. The personal commentary is something unique that I think really is not done well anywhere else on the web! Also the audio resources on SI would be much better used if they co-orsponded with scripture. I am intending on just using the King James Version as the scripture text and focus on helps such as commentaires, linking audio files, audio bible readings, and other things added to it. So its not there to replace e-sword but I am thinking it would be a very good addition for SI and some of the features would be unique and would be used? ie not intergrating greek/hebrew would be easier for me and ie wouldnt be trying to replace e-sword, I know the e-sword application quite well and its the best free bible software out there:http://www.e-sword.net

My Commentary FunctionI have decided to streamline this module to more being geared around the commentary function. It will enable you to make a online commentary and then save or print it out to pdf! This will be an envaluable free resource for pastors, teachers, and others students of Gods word. There is a way to do studies and sermons also, so you can save them and print then out or save as pdf version for free. This will be a cost-effective way for you to do these things without expensive software. Its in beta production now and should be ready soon for registered users of SI. Without registering and logging in you can still browse the bible and check out the commentaries but you wont be able to add your own commentary unless you start a free account.

the site i use the most is blueletterbible.com that would be a good site to look at for ideas on what you might like to add. It has just about everything you could possible want for free... including strongs and everything.

I am in talks with them to hopefully get some of the audio sermons up on the site. Thanks for the great suggestion brother.
