The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon into blood

I have a question. Was Joel ch 2 fulfilled in Acts ch 2? And if not, then when will it be?

sorry I am not sure what your asking here. I am not sure how you are relating this. If you were talking about God pouring out His Spirit on all flesh and sons and daughters prophecying, etc, I think it is, but it is ongoing. What part are you relating to each other in these passages?

=====================================================
Yes and no.

Prophecy when spoken takes effect as God's revelation.

From here, it follows the course of all things in the world, through times and seasons. Sowing, turning soil, producing fruit and reaping...(in this order, though it may seem strange compared to current farming practices)... and continues becoming more and more physically realized until it finds fulness.

Joel 2 (mentioned in Acts) was the manifestation of one of how many successive fulfillments?

(The best way to determine is to look to other scripture for comparison, and then still wonder and search.)

Jesus said in Luke 21, Mark 13, and Matthew 24, towards the end of each Olivet prophetic discourse, that after the tribulation the sun will be darkened and the Moon will turn blood red, then the Son of man shall appear in His glory from heaven, the angels with Him.

As for rain, there is still a time coming for an outpouring of the former and the latter rain together.

Prophecy becomes more manifest IRL as time passes, and God's Word always does as it is poured out to do. (It just doesn't happen like we think it should.)

See Rev. 19.10

(Some do not believe this.)

Every prophecy is fulfilled ultimately in Jesus Christ.

This phenomena often occurs with violent shifts of tectonic plates, in earthquakes of great magnitude.

It also occurs with volcanic activity.

Though we have seen this on a small regional scale where either/and/or dust, ahs, and smoke fills the atmosphere.

It's thought that both the heavens and earth being shaken might just do the trick, as far as a world scale event.

(i could be wrong, as often, the scriptures often speak in regard to Israel in particular, and outlying areas secondarily.)

Personally, Acts 2 has not been researched nor the history surrounding it in the thoughts of your concern...though it does not seemed to have happened...yet. (i wasn't there so i couldn't tell you. Check records of history, beginning with Josephus.)

God Bless you 2,
g

mossman: I think if you couple the prophecy in Joel with the reiteration of the prophecy in Revelation 6:12, you probably come to the conclusion that this event is still to come. The events seen by the OT prophets were not always easily understandable nor were they laid out on a clearly defined time-line. The prophets were faithful to write what they had seen and heard. So it is not at all strange to have one verse speak of an event that happened in 30 AD or so and the next verse speak of an event that has yet to happen. It is also what gives eschatology that ever unfolding quality and makes it very difficult to be too terribly dogmatic about your eschatalogical stance.

Travis says
'It is also what gives eschatology that ever unfolding quality and makes it very difficult to be too terribly dogmatic about your eschatalogical stance.'

I can, without difficulty be very dogmatic about my eschatalogical stance..... but I will try not to be.

Many teachers explain prophesy fulfilment using the folowing from Luke 4:16-21
'And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears'.(KJV)

Jesus is reading from Isaiah 61. Where He closed the book and sits down, Isaiah goes on to say ....
' To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God;'

Jesus then said that ' this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears'.

Since Jesus came, this is now a 'Day of Grace'. The gospel is preached to the poor, captives in sin are delivered. It is 'the acceptable year of the Lord'. And Acts 2 is a fulfillment of all the spiritual promises of Joel and the other prophets. God is gathering by His Spirit a spirtual people, citizens of heaven.

But there will come a future day - 'The day of vengeance of our God'. It is also called in scripture 'the day of the Lord'

This will be a time when 'God will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained' ie Jesus Christ - Acts 17.31

This will be a time when the nations will see demonstations of God's power in judgement on those who have not believed the gospel during the acceptable year of the Lord. Then:--

'29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory'. Matt 24:29-30 (KJV)

As Travis says this is reiterated in Revelation chap 6. In fact most people agree that the way to understand old testament prophesies is in the light of the new testament.

In the book of Revelation, from chapter 4 to 20, Jesus, through John is bringing together all the old testament prophesies concerning this 'day of vengeance of our God', and revealing it to the church from heaven's viewpoint. John was an apostle and a prophet. Revelation is prophesy and is an open book. As such it is the key to opening other prophesies which had been sealed. Am I being dogmatic?

Love to all the brethren

David
