Onward Christian Soldiers (revised for our generation)

sermonindex Oct 28, 2004

Onward Christian Soldiers (revised for our generation)Backward Christian soldiers, fleeing from the fight. With the Cross of Jesus, nearly out of sight.Christ our rightful master, stands against the foe.But forward into battle, we are loathe to go.Like a mighty tortoise moves the Church of God. Brothers we are treading where we've always trod.We are much divided, many bodies we having many doctrines, not much charity.Crowns and thorns may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,But the Church of Jesus hidden does remain.Gates of Hell should never 'gainst the Church prevailWe have Christ's own promise, but think that it will fail.Sit here then ye people, join our useless throngBlend with ours your voices in a feeble song.Blessings, ease, and comfort, ask from Christ the KingWith our modern thinking, we don't do a thing.written by Anonymous

That's a good one! (well, it is sad)Blessings, ease, and comfort, ask from Christ the KingWith our modern thinking, we don't do a thing. So true, so true. The one thing we can still count on is that Christ is increasing and becoming All in All whether anybody does anything about it or not. So take that, devil! ;-) In Him, Chanin

written by AnonymousThis was written, or at least the original version, by a Bible College student in the UK in the 1960s. I have his face in my mind but not his name. It was during the time when English satire was emerging as the new humour. the tell-tale lines in the original were..."Like a mighty tortoise moves the Church of God.Brothers we are treading where we've always trod.We are much divided, many bodies we strong in faith and doctrine, weak in charity."It was written partly as a protest of the lack of Christian acitivity in social issues. Sadly, my last information was that he had backslidden.
