“So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.” (John 11:6)

\tJesus tarried two days instead of immediately going to revive sick Lazarus. By the time he had gotten there Lazarus had been dead in the tomb for four days. If he had left immediately he probably would have came upon the tomb of Lazarus after he had been dead for a short time.
Why tarry then? Because of the stench. "Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days." (John 11:39). Jesus wanted people, his people to believe, and to behold the Glory of God. "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" (John 11:40). The dead body of the church will raise a horrible odor before God breathes life into it. But have faith! When his people step out of their tomb Jesus will be glorified! "This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."

Jewish understanding at the turn from B.C. to A.D. --and still remains in the reckoning of some-- was that a person is not actually dead until three full 24 hour days passed.

The resurrection of Lazarus was a precursor to the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus also remained entombed for the recognized time, arising after the 3rd day.

The issue of Lazarus can and should be taken in relation to Jesus resurrection and His proclaiming, I AM the resurrection and the life."

John 11.40 is future tense, and though He is speaking in reference to Lazarus, He is alluding to His own resurrection here, and throughout this passage ...as if a spear impaled through his side and blood and water flowing out weren't enough of a sign already.

What you write makes perfect sense, when a person's body 'stinketh' like that being telltale as a sure physical sign of death; of course, after the initial 3 day waiting period recognized to consider the carcass undeniably and reliably dead).

Your point of the church being dead brings the Revelation of Jesus to mind and the church Sardis. It stinketh.

There is still life, though many are dead or sleep
...yet how many will arise?

death and sin upon us; but glory
to GOD; HE found us and called us
and raised us from death to life!!
