Does anyone have a book recommendation?

I thought it might be interesting to ask everyone who looks at this thread to recommend a book that they have read and has been a great strengthener in the faith. If you wish please leave a reply with a book that has recently helped you or one that has been a great help to you in the past.

Mine is "Pursuit of God" by A. W. Tozer

I read that he wrote the rough draft on an overnight train ride and began to work on it afterwards. Leonard Ravenhill said in one of his sermons that Dr. Tozer worked on it unconsciously for 25 years through meditation and prayer and worship in his office. The fruit of that labor? A spiritual classic that can and will transform your life.

As Dr. Tozer walks you through the chapters of that book, and carefully points to the different points of discussion that he brings about, you feel drawn into the marvelous heart of a great man of God and his desire for all men to share in that closeness.

He draws from the mystics and other authors of old throughout, like Thomas a Kempis, Nicolas of Cusa, Frederick Faber, others. There is much timeless wisdom in those quotes.

There are ten reasonably short chapters in this book covering such subjects as "Following Hard after God" "Removing the Veil" "Aprehending God" "The Speaking Voice" and my personal favorite "The Gaze of the Soul" (beautiful chapter) to name a few. Throughout each, Bro. Tozer's prophetic and impassioned voice rings loud and clear through the power of the printed page.

The length of the book is not very large page-wise, but it is a sprawling, majestic piece in the spiritual realm. This book I personally highly recommend to all who have a hunger and thirst for righteousness and a desire for greater intimacy with God. I have read it twice through, and a chapter here and there numerous times. This book is probably best put into the hands of those who have just passed that stage of "new convert" and are in their spiritual adolesence. It would benefit them greatly to taste of the meat in this small tome.

All in all, this is definitely one of the best books that I have read, it has edified me the most at least. It was hard to choose between this, "Knowledge of the Holy" or "Why Revival Tarries" but this one is just too grand to take second place to any. (Even though the other ones are equally incredible)

Some books that I have personally read and have marvelously brought me closer to God's grace, his love, and holiness are: Why Revival Tarries by Leonard Ravenhill, Love Enthroned by Daniel Steele, Calvary Road by Roy Hession, The Pursuit of God: A. W. Tozer, and anything written by EM Bounds.

"The Pursuit of God" is a classic that I never tire of reading. It seems like the Lord has always led me to read certain books that proved to be just what I needed at the time. "The Attributes of God" by Tozer is another book that will enable the reader to know God better.

Watchman Nee's books were used by the Lord early in my Christian life to keep me on the right track. One of the first books I read by Brother Nee was "Sit, Walk, and Stand." Another book that has meant a lot to me is "Christ the Sum of All Spiritual Things." A book that I have read until it is literally falling apart is "The Spiritual Man".

"Abide in Christ" and "Absoulte Surrender" are two classics by Andrew Murray.

"The School of Christ" by T. Austin Sparks is another great book.

One of my favorite books on revival is "Azusa Street" by Frank Bartleman.

Two other books that I have gone back to many times is "No Other Foundation" by DeVern Fromke (out of print). "We would See Jesus" by Roy Hession.

Great idea for a post! I have just recently finished reading Radical by David Platt, great book! Some others that I have benefitted from are:

Samuel Morris: apostle of simple faith by Terry Whalin
God is the Gospel by John Piper
Justification and Regeneration by Charles Leiter

Some that have had a lot of impact on me personally:

Knowledge of the Holy by Tozer...the only book that I could not simply read from chapter to chapter. I had to stop, pray, digest before I went on.

Christ the Healer by F.F. Bosworth...I think a very powerful book on healing.

The Normal Christian Life and The Normal Christian Church Life both by Nee are great books.

I personally have received so much from the Lord in the Classics. They had such a deep love relationship with the Lord. I dont think they had the distractions we have. TV, movies, sports, programs etc.

I have enjoyed so many of the auto and biography's of our former brothers and sisters. Here is a link to some of them.

Type in her name on youtube and she gave a very amusing interview to Parkinson.Really uplifting.One of her books is called fighting for the King.What an amazing woman,Staff

There are three books im reading, Sermons of Robert Murray M Cheyne, Goforth of Chinna and Autobiography of Charles G. Finney. You can feel the unction, anointing, power, holiness and the flames of the Holy Spirit burning to your heart if you really are under the influence of the Holy Ghost when reading these books.ah! i personally feel more the lack of power and anointing in my life, my heart need to be broken up by the Spirit.

M Cheyne gave some powerfull messages of hell before passed away, and they are included in the book. I can imaging the holy fear griping the congregation as they hear of the wrath to God....at the same time what pleadings he makes with the unsaved to come to Christ. May be it will be the 8th wonder to find a pastor today preaching in the same spirit and unction.

Its the second time im reading the bio of Jonathan Goforth. this men was all on fire for Jesus, his zeal was apostolic in reaching the lost for Christ in chinna. Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord, was his life moto, and his life was an illustration of what it means to live and walk by the Spirit and minister in the Spirit too.

As for Finney that man was filled with the Spirit right after his convertion and he became a soul winner if i might use that term from the beginning. He knew how to prevail with God in prayer,and what it means to pay in the Spirit with unutterable groanings. From the begining to the end of his ministry you read about people under the convictions of the Holy Spirit, people regenarated and sanctified by faith and transformed by the power of Christ. The promise of Christ that rivers of living water will flow out of us that believe was not just a wish but a living experience to him.

I have been reading "The Two Covenants" by Andrew Murray for about three and a half months. If you knew me, you would know that was weird.

Every paragraph halts me dead in my tracks. It is like spiritual bench-pressing, where someone adds more weight to the bar with each repetition.

I highly recommend it. Although it certainly is leaving me with questions, they are good questions, questions that are driving me to scripture over and over again, and driving me to prayer even more.

Thank you so much for your many responses! I will look for most of these titles in the future.

Also, I wanted to ask if anyone has read Ravenhill's "Revival God's Way"? I am currently re-reading it slowly and have found it to be a tremendous blessing. There are many poems and hymns that he wrote to go along with the chapters, and it contains a great prayer-emphasis. It's almost like "Why Revival Tarries" all over again. (Not quite, but almost.)

Also, a great biography I read would be John G. Paton's autobiography. It's a good 500 pages, but well worth reading about this pioneer missionary in the New Hebrides.
The Vision Forum is currently publishing it for 18.00, but the book was given to my family by some friends. Highly recommended.

When Leonard Ravenhill was asked what books he would recommend to pastors and ministry leaders, the first book that he suggested was "The Christian in Complete Armour" by William Gurnell. I realize some of these are duplicates to others postings, but they are fabulous reads.

Knowledge of the Holy was one of the required readings in Bible school. It should be read by every Christian along with The Calvary Road.

Reading Rees Howells will give you are renewed vision and passion for prayer. It is an amazing story of the life of a man whose influence in the realm of intercessory prayer lead by the Holy Spirit was used to change the tide of the wickedness during WW2.
