HAVE YOU FELT LIKE GIVING UP LATELY?

HAVE YOU FELT LIKE GIVING UP LATELY?

A number of ministers have written to me expressing their concern for parishioners who are simply giving up. “Good honest Christians are so overwhelmed by guilt and condemnation that it causes despair. When they can’t live up to their own expectations, when they fall back into sin, they decide to give up….”

Growing numbers of Christians are at the breaking point. Few Christians would even dare entertain thoughts of quitting on their love for Jesus, but in despair they consider giving up on themselves.

Some ministers today continually preach only a positive message. To hear them tell it, every Christian is receiving miracles, everybody is getting instant answers to prayer; everybody is feeling good, living well, and the whole world is bright and rosy. I love to hear that kind of preaching because I really desire all those good and healthy things for God’s people. But that’s not the way things are for a great number of very honest, sincere Christians.

No wonder our young people give up in defeat. They can’t live up to the image, created by religion, of a carefree, rich, successful, always positive-thinking Christian. Their world is not that ideal; they live with heartbreaks, hour-by-hour crises, and family problems.

Paul talked about trouble: “…trouble which came to us…we were pressed out of [burdened beyond] measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life” (see 2 Corinthians 1:8).

Positive thinking won’t make these problems go away and “confessing” that these problems don’t really exist doesn’t change a thing. What is the cure? There are two absolutes that have brought me great comfort and help.

• God loves me. He is a loving Father wanting only to lift us out of our weakness.
• It is my faith that pleases him most. He wants me to trust him.

the times so far in my christian life when i felt the most tried, distressed and was "feelingly" close to give up. Somehow the lord lead me to this mans preaching and in those moments they where as God spoke to me directly, i hope someone else can find some comfort and encouragement from them as i have done.

I have certainly felt surrounded by lions in my walk with the Lord. I have definately experienced despair and lonliness and a feeling of being overwhelmed, even recently. I have found myself on the floor with my face in the carpet weeping at my own weaknesses. Knowing how far I fall short, feeling that there is no purpose in any of it. There are just sometimes when you have to hear from God.

There can come a great strength in looking back on your walk and re-counting your blessings and deliverences. Each time the Lord delivers us then our faith is built. We discover less about our own faith and more about the faithfulness of God.

2Co 1:5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

Not sure what those ministers who only teach a positive message would make of a Scripture that talks about sufferings and the word abound? What I do know is that every valley that the Lord brings us through, every shadow of death that we pass through, every trial, every tribulation that is experienced is an arrow in the quiver of the saints who keep on walking.

And as they keep on walking and adding arrows to their quivers then the Lord calls upon them at some point and they pull that arrow out and they take dead aim at hoplessness and despair in others and they shoot God given hope into the hearts of their brothers and sisters. No amount of theology and knowledge can every compare to the saint who has walked the hard , lonely narrow road. That saint is a living epistle. He is the handywork of the master who works in him. Satan hates him because he stands as a testimony to an overcoming Christ and brigns hope to the hopeless, brings light to those who dwell in darkness. Oh the mystery and the beauty of the saints who are refined.

Lift up your heads today saints. Our walk in Christ is a walk through the deepest valleys and the darkest days but also the highest moutaintops and the glories of heaven. And the walk is leading us ever closer unto Him. To those who overcome in Him, to those who keep on walking, you will one day soon weep no more. And all the sorrows of this sinful world will be done. Its a glorious plan brothers and sisters, lift up your eyes unto the hills and see where our help comes from........... brother Frank
