Gluttony Is A Sin!!

sermonindex Feb 4, 2011

Proverbs 23:21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Though I am not a drunkard, but I am very fat or obese. I weigh 325 pounds and I am in need of your prayers. I am asking for prayers that I have the encouragement to get out and exercise.

I eat good healthy food but I eat too much of it. I can't just have a bowl of cereal, I have to have a salad bowl of it. My plate is a mixing bowl filled with salad, rice and fresh fish, but it's portioned too much. I know if I can get my weight down the portions will come down as well. I've never gotten this far away with my weight, I usually see what's happening and get out and do something about it, but for the last year I have been getting more lazier.

I've posted a verse at the top and I would like for your prayers first of all, but also your understanding of the scriptures when it comes to gluttony. And any testimonies that might be shared for those that have been overweight and have overcome.

God Bless and thank you for praying.

Yes may God make us content with smaller portions even though we still feel hungry after. Their god is their bellies is sadly something that applies to our culture. But brother please don't condemn yourself, God is a God of grace and He accepts you in Christ. But can help you overcome this sin and help you recover your health.

Bless you for your honesty my friend and may God bless you with His Spirit even this night as you agree with Him with this sin.

Dear Brother Approved, I still love your posts so don't allow ANYTHING to stop you from encouraging us and uplifting The Name of Jesus, whatever you do, don't lose contact with the Body here. You are appreciated more than you know - Amen.

The only thing that I've heard recently about appetite is that appetite can be satisfied with liquids. I didn't know that. So when you get hungry - fill up on water or some organic-natural low-cal fruit or veggie juice first. Be sure it's natural though. Aspertame makes people hungry... besides just being another poison and there's a lot of those in the non-organic stuff.

Brother, not to worry - O.K.?

Jesus Bless and cheer you! Amen.
The 'JOY' of The LORD is our 'Strength' - depression kills.
I pray you get blasted by His Love and that Joy takes over in the most freeing way. Knowing and feeling His Love for you (us) is the most freeing experience that He pours out.
Well, yes, I am saying - Don't Worry - Be Happy!

He does have a sense of humor - despite all the other stuff.
:)

It can be just as much a sin of the flesh to be a fit and trim hardbody if your motivation is to inflate your ego and the lust of the eye and of the flesh.

Obesity can also be genetic in origin:

Something to consider looking into:

Greetings Approved

I will pray for you. It truly is a difficult sin to overcome, but nothing is impossible with our Lord Jesus. Cling to Him, seek Him daily on this. Let Him be Lord of your life in this area as well. Praying and seeking Him over what I should eat, when I should eat, and how much I should eat really helped me to see things as He would want me to. If Jesus is to be Lord of our lives it must be in all things, including our eating, exercise, and everything other aspect of our daily living. I encourage you to keep seeking Him in this area of your life and I will be praying for you.

God Bless

Hey bro. I am one of those people that everybody hates because I can eat "whatever" I want and stay slim. What most do not know is time I spend in prayer and fasting.

The discipline of fasting has many benefits. One being, my spirit is in charge here, not my flesh. Probably the greatest purpose in fasting is to humble ourselves before the Lord.

If you have never tried this, perhaps humbling your self in fasting and prayer will strengthen your spirit and bring the grace of God to enable you to control your appetite. Try a day a week or so and see if God doesn't show up in many ways.
I am praying for you.

Perhaps this is something I need to read, I have always had a high metabolism but here this past year or so it started to take a decline and I have put on some weight. My wife loves the weight gain because she wants to weigh less than me but having children ruined that for her. This greatly reminds me that even "skinny" people can be gluttonous, or at least I know I can be. I will not only pray for you but also join in your efforts against this sin by repenting of it as well and seeking freedom from it.

Thank your friends, brothers and sisters for your prayers and thoughts on this matter.

I wish to convey how this morning I was able to get some exercise. I pulled out the fridge and completely washed that thoroughly. I didn't want to over do it, but I was able to accomplish that. As soon as I hit reply for this posting, I have laundry piled up that need folding and to be put away. When I started washing the fridge, I thought about about you here on SI and thanked the Lord for your continued prayers. I thought, "someone has prayed, because I just wouldn't have the strength to do this". But strength arrived, praise God.

I still look forward to hearing more on the subject of gluttony and any knowledge that you have, even a testimony. I will keep you posted and to any weight lost.

God Bless and thank you.

Restinhim had a good suggestion. Have your thyroid checked. You may indeed be gluttonous but it doesn't hurt to have it checked. It can be overactive or underactive.

I am a glutton also, I quit smoking this year too so it is tempting to eat more. It has given me motivation knowing I need to eat less because I don't want to be enslaved by anything now, and I want to be obedient to God.

I am counting calories and eating heathier more natural homecooked food and doing more exercise.

You are not the only one anyway. Keep at it!

I know that this may sound "earthly," but I also think that it is good for the children of God to be good stewards of the bodies that belong to the Lord. After all, our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit.

There were very careful parameters to be followed in regard to the original Temple (and Tabernacle). God's Temple was not supposed to be abused, neglected or even garnished with graffiti (tattoos?).

Not only should we avoid gluttony, but, as Greg pointed out, we should avoid any desires that stray from contentment. This is the great flaw in the "prosperity" movement. It is teaching the people of God to long for and greatly desire the excessive things of this life.

Regarding the neglect of the body...

I suggest that believers do what they can to remain healthy. Yes, there are legitimate and varying reasons why some people can be overweight. It is a product of age (which is typically a result of less physical activity). Our modern society provides jobs that can make some people gain weight simply by working behind a desk...using elevators/escalators...or getting around by automobiles.

To counter such things, it is a good idea to maintain healthy physical activity.

Believers can walk, jog, run, and even ride bicycles. If you can't get out and about, I suggest engaging in physical activities indoors. I suggest an elliptical machine. An elliptical machine can be better than a treadmill (or even regular outdoor walking or running). An elliptical is easier on the joints (knees, feet and hips) and is self-propelled (it doesn't run on automatic like a treadmill). As such, an elliptical machine is very quiet.

My wife and I have an elliptical machine, and we listen to SermonIndex messages as we use it. Both of us have always been thin, but we quickly noticed a tremendous difference in our bodies. Not only did we trim excess "newlywed weight" -- but we also noticed that we had more energy, stamina and even our thoughts seemed clearer. Listening to various messages or praise/worship music makes the time seem to fly by! I know this sounds funny -- but I have been touched by God while on the machine. I can't count the times where I was moved to tears while I was jogging on the elliptical -- either by a revelation from one of the messages I was listening to, worship or just praying as I ran/jogged/walked.

Of course, it isn't a sin to be overweight. There are legitimate reasons that are beyond our control. However, laziness and gluttony are sins. By working (or working out) by the sweat of our brow, we can buffet our bodies into physical subjection as we also do this spiritually.

May the Lord bless each of us as we maintain the Temple of the Holy Spirit in the wilderness of this world.

I believe it should be, “When I get my portions down, I believe my weight will come down.”

It is true, calories count whether they are empty or not. (empty calorie = sugar). Counting calories worked 50 years ago and it is still proving to provide weight loss today. People (not you) don’t like to do because it takes too much work (me included!).

Here is a good calorie counting guide, it’s from About.com Nutrition:

I found that even just paying attention the amount of calories has improved my dieting. I don't necessarily keep tract with great detail but simply stay mindful of them, doing this has reduced some of my portion sizes and overall what kind of stuff I eat. I also have been chowing down on fruits and vegatables more which has helped greatly.

Approved, It is important to find support. I would suggest a Weight Watchers meeting (you can look for them on the internet).I believe they are nation wide.
It would be helpful to have a friend or family member join so you can motivate one another. It keeps you accountable.

Usually when one is overeating the question could be asked what's eating you? Food is very easy to turn to for comfort.
Weight Watchers covers the emotional aspect as well as the physical.

I hope you look into it or go to a meeting. The meetings are fun and offer much support in the areas you mentioned.
