For all of you who may not know, this past summer I went to Kyiv, Ukraine on a mission trip and plan on returning next summer. So... to me, this news is quite interesting. But Moscow didn't like it, and some warned of a new cold war.The verdict on Ukraine's presidential election was nearly unanimous. "Fraud" was the word most often used. "We cannot accept this result," said Secretary of State Colin Powell. European leaders were no less blunt; their chief observer likened the vote as the sort that would be held in North Korea. And then there was Russian President Vladimir Putin. He called the vote "open and honest," and congratulated the purported winner on his "convincing victory."... The lines could not be more clearly drawn—within Ukraine, but also between Russia and the West. On one side is the candidate of the country's ruling elite: Viktor Yanukovych, the current prime minister heavily backed by Moscow. On the other: Viktor Yushchenko, who pledges to crack down on corruption and take the country toward membership in NATO and the European Union. When the government completed its official count and narrowly awarded the election to hard-liner Yanukovych—despite exit polls showing a decisive victory for his liberal rival—confrontation was inevitable.
