Everyone knows that feeling of eating way to much food. Ever eat way to much scripture? What I mean by this is going into a deep study and gathering way to much information to be placed into effective application.
Just like there must be a balance of eating and digesting I believe there needs to be the same thing with Bible Study. Read the Word often and daily but allow what the Holy Spirit is teaching you digest and apply it to your life before you move on to the next course or meal.
Did you know if you eat or drink something in a large quantity it could actually kill you? This is not just saying your body can't physically handle the content but your body will actually react to the nutrients of the food in a negative way. Here lately I it seems I have lost an appetite for studing the bible, and though in the past this greatly alarmed me and it meant I had to be an apostate, It doesn't bother me so much anymore. Why? because I have overeaten and must learn how to digest the vast information that is already there.
I believe God pushes and pulls as He needs to draw us closer and at times this means a push when we need time to digest what He is trying to teach us. Like we will maul over a biblical truth and think we have the lesson learned only to find we are far from it. Very similar to Israel in the desert should we need it God will make us walk around the mountain again until He knows we are ready and have learned the lesson.
I don't know a whole lot about how the Holy Spirit works nor do I claim to be an expert but I know this from experience, that sometimes Birth Pangs must happen before a birth takes place.
