The mouth

The bible says alot about the mouth and what comes out of it. As christians we are taught that we should not cuss, bear false witness against neighbors, lie and so forth. Yet, I noticed a number of beleivers who do cuss. Some do alot and others just a little bit as well as tell little lies and such.

Should christians have excuses for these things such as it was a weak moment in their life or maybe they do it because they are going through some hard times in their personal lives?

I was recently confronted someone online about their mouth. Cussing wise. This person has made a post on a particular forum asking non theists about christians and cussing but it is also mixing a few other topics in there as well. He says that if a christian has a foul mouth but is a good husband and leads a model life why then should some cussing matter. It is straining at small things.

It is my opinion that the mouth can bless and curse. For what comes out of the mouth of a man defiles a man. If he shows foul words it shows he does not have his heart under control. I believe it is those who don't care who make excuses.

Personally, it is a pet peeve of mine and I don't know if it should be. Am I making too much of this subject or should I have as much concern as I do now.

1 Cor 11v1, 'Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ'.

Fact is, if someone knows the word of God, and yet pleases themselves in speech, conduct etc, you just have to leave them to God, and in their own self-deception.

It is a concern, but if they won't listen, what can anyone do?

Hum interesting subject and a tough one at that. I believe it is the intent of the words spoken because the only thing that makes a word "filthy or a cuss" word is the cultural setting. If this man in anger is cussing someone out because they did something wrong to him then he is in the wrong. However there have been times especially in my younger days where if something scared me or shocked me or if I hit my thumb with a hammer a cuss word would fly in pain. Does it make it right? My convictions say no and that is why by Grace Christ is purifying my speech.

I work with people who cuss A LOT, they know by my speech I don't really cuss or make it apart of my regular vocabulary and so they use it far less around me but when they cuss some appologize I simply tell them I don't appreciate it or like to hear it but its a free country and I ultimately can't stop them.

Again though it all goes back to the intent and use. If someone just enjoys cussing I personally view it as immaturity and show them some grace because we are all maturing at our own rates. Paul charges the Philipians 4:8 with "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things."

In our culture cussing is none of those things and so I avoid it. So are you making mountains out of mole hills? I would say this verse should be enough to refute someone pro-cussing and if it doesn't, leave it at that and pray the Lord matures their heart. What should be really alarming is the fact that What goes in Must Come out because whatever we place in our hearts is what comes out of our mouths.

Hmm, It sounds to me like it is an issue that I shouldn't concern myself over so much. In my eyes I have often seen it as a reflection of the heart especially if it is done in a non stressed environment. Using any kind of foul language brings stgma to anyone. Ever heard the term 'cuss like a sailor'?

It just seems to me like speech is something that christians don't think much of unless it is preaching the Gospel. Maybe I am the one overthinking all of this and I should just keep it all to myself. I have often wondered that if this is the case is there anything else that I have pet peeves about that I shouldn't?

Titus 2v8, 'Sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you'.

It is a matter of concern. Not for you, but for him.

We all know a bad example when we see one, so why follow it?

Our standard for life, and the final authority is the word of God, the Bible, not the opinions of men.

Scripture also warns about being a stumbling block to other believers, what about the unbelievers?

Still, we given unbelievers enough fuel already with which to mock the gospel

Why should they change, when 'Christians' are exactly like them?

It would be great to try and list out the 1000 verses or so that speak on the tongue, mouth, lips, etc here in this thread. This a very important subject and "key" to our being blameless in our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. If your heart is sanctified your tongue will be also.
