The Psalms and Poetry

sermonindex Aug 4, 2011

Hi Guys, the Lord has laid it upon my heart to write a poem based on every one of Psalms :) Quite overwhleming to me, only 150 of them :) So here goes with number one :)

Plant me by the rivers, Oh Living God
That I may drink of thee
Plant me by the rivers oh Living God
Make me like an evergreen tree

My delight is in the law and it is my roots
Sunk down deeper ever closer to thee
Lead me to the Rock that is higher that I
Make me like an evergreen tree

Though the landscape turns to desert
And the world turns its back on thee
Night and day I shall come before you
Make me like an evergreen tree

So may I walk in the council of the Godly
Walking ever closer to thee
May I be a vessel for thy good pleasure
Make me like an evergreen tree

Psa 1:1 Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, and has not stood in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the seat of the scornful.
Psa 1:2 But his delight is only in the Law of Jehovah; and in His Law he meditates day and night.
Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivulets of water that brings forth its fruit in its seasons, and its leaf shall not wither, and all which he does shall be blessed.
Psa 1:4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff which the wind drives away.
Psa 1:5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
Psa 1:6 For Jehovah knows the way of the righteous; but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

You have an enormous job writing a poem about each of the Psalms, Frank.

Since you wrote about the righteous, now you will need to write one about the the ungodly! You're not done with Psalm 1! :-)

I do find v.1 meaningful: "Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, and has not stood in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the seat of the scornful." Or, one can word it like this: "Blessed is the man that does not look to Dear Abby or Rush Limbaugh for counsel in decision-making which will create in you scorn for anything Godly.." Frank, I would love to read your version...mine is not good, just a jumping off place.

God bless you in this adventure!

HI Ginnyrose, its so funny that you mention that. I have been working on the poems for the last week and I realized that I was struggling when it came to David calling fire down upon His enemies. I have been trying to capture the essence of each psalm and have definately struggled in that area, but I think I have improved as I go along :) I have been forgiven for such a great debt in my life that it is a hard concept to want my enemies " to pay," which was definately a part of the psalms. The interesting part of this proect to me is to bring a mind that knows fully that God Himself came from heaven above and died for us and commanded that we love and forgive our enemies. Here is Psalm 2 poem

The nations rage and the people plot
They shout in vain for they have not
They are a wrinkle, they are a spot
And the Lord He laughs from heaven

On My holy hill I have set my King
And around the world the church bells ring
My people bow down and I hear them sing
Of my glorious Son in heaven

Kiss the Son and bend the knee
He's the one who died to set you free
And with the Son you'll ever be
Eternally forever in heaven

Psa 2:1 Why do the nations rage, and the peoples meditate on a vain thing?
Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers plot together, against Jehovah and against His anointed, saying,
Psa 2:3 Let us break their bands in two and cast away their cords from us.
Psa 2:4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; Jehovah shall mock at them.
Psa 2:5 Then He shall speak to them in His anger, and trouble them in His wrath.
Psa 2:6 Yea, I have set My king on My holy hill, on Zion.
Psa 2:7 I will declare the decree of Jehovah. He has said to Me, You are My Son; today I have begotten You.
Psa 2:8 Ask of Me, and I shall give the nations for Your inheritance; and the uttermost parts of the earth for Your possession.
Psa 2:9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
Psa 2:10 And now be wise, O kings; be instructed, O judges of the earth.
Psa 2:11 Serve Jehovah with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Psa 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled in but a little time. Blessed are all who put their trust in Him.

Psalm 3 Poem.....

You oh Lord are a shield for me
You are the glory and the lifter of my head
There are many who would rise up against me Lord
There are many who would have me dead

Yet I laid my head down and slept in peace
When ten thousand were all around
They screamed and they howled and they cursed me Lord
When I awoke they were nowhere to be found

You have arisen oh Lord, you have saved me oh God
You have struck all my enemies dead
Salvation belongs in the hands of my God
At Calvary where you died and bled

Victorious you arose from what seemed like defeat
The enemy in complete disaray
You conquered, you vanquished you completly destroyed
Total victory was won on that day.

A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom. O Lord, how my foes have increased! Many are the ones who rise up against me. Many are saying of my soul, There is no deliverance for him in God. Selah. But You, O Jehovah, are a shield for me; my glory, the One who lifts up my head. I cried to Jehovah with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy hill. Selah. I laid down and slept. I awoke, for Jehovah kept me. I am not afraid of ten thousands of people who have set against me all around. Arise, O Jehovah; save me, O my God; for You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone. You have broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongs to Jehovah. Your blessing is on Your people. Selah.
(Psa 3:1-8)

Psalm 4 Poem...........

How long oh sinful sons of men
Will you put my glory to shame
How long will you love your worthless things
How long will you dishonor my name

The Lord will set apart for Himself
Seven thousand who have nor bent the knee
We shall offer the sacrifice of righteousness
To the one who died on the tree

And a mighty harvest there has been
Of gladness as you light up our face
In your presence we dwell and shall forevermore
In a continual and perpetual embrace

Psa 4:2)
O sons of men, how long will you turn My glory into shame? Will you love vanity and seek after a lie? Selah.

(Psa 4:3)
But know that Jehovah has set apart the godly for Himself. Jehovah hears when I call to Him.

(Psa 4:4)
Tremble, and sin not; speak within your own heart on your bed and be still. Selah.

(Psa 4:5)
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in Jehovah.

(Psa 4:6)
There are many who say, Who will show us any good? Jehovah, lift up the light of Your face on us.

(Psa 4:7)
You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their grain and their wine increased.

(Psa 4:8)
I will lie down, both in peace and in sleep. For You alone, Jehovah, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 5......

I come to thee oh Lord, where you dwell
And cry out, that you may hear
Give me strength oh Lord, that I might tell
To be brave and not to fear

I will arise in the morning and I will look up
And I will hear what my Master will say
Oh Lord I have come, so please fill my cup
That I may follow you all of the day

Let all them rejoice who trust in you
You will deliver, from all of their foe
As they walk in the day and follow whats true
They shall arise and they shall go

Psalm 6.......

My soul is greatly troubled
But you oh Lord-how long
I am weary with my groaning
And my night has lost its song

All night long my bed it swims
And my couch is bathed in tears
My grief has overwhelmed me
And I am surrounded by all my fears

The Lord has heard my weeping
As I lay in my bed at night
Oh Lord you know how weak I am
For you have surely beheld my plight

Oh Lord do not rebuke my soul
And in your sorrow chasten me
For you came and died upon the cross
You came to set me free

I will praise you in the morning Lord
I will praise you in the night
For you have heard the cry of your servant, Lord
And I run into your marvelous light

Psalm 7.........

Oh Lord my God
In whom I put my trust
If you do not deliver me
I shall be trampled in the dust

Search me oh Lord
Is there any wicked way in me
KNow me in my inward parts
This is my earnest plea

And when you look inside me Lord
Its His righteousness that you see
And in the beauty of your holiness
You came and you set me free

You are my just defender Lord
You go before me into the fight
You made your arrows into fiery shafts
And your victory is a glorious sight

Psalm 8........

What is man that you are mindfull of him
Yet you crowned him with honor and glory
And out of the mouths of infants and babes
They cry out that old, old story

Of how you came from heaven above
And filled the earth with mercy and love
Even the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky
Glorify your name and lift you on high

Oh Lord how excellent is your name
Since the day I met you, I've never been the same
You took what was bound and you set it free
You restored my soul to how it was meant to be

When I consider the heavens, the work of your hand
I see the glory and majesty of all that you planned
And so, on your truth forever I'll stand
Until the day that I enter the promised land

Psalm 9.........

He does not forget the cry of the humble
Have mercy on me oh Lord I pray
He gives grace to the meek, and makes the evil man stumble
And gives light for His child to walk in the day

The Lord is a refuge for all those oppressed
He is my strong high tower
He forgave all my sins when I confessed
That I may walk with Him in power

I will praise you oh Lord with all of my heart
I shall praise your name most high
We shall walk hand in hand and never apart
Until the very day that I die

And then for all eternity I'll be
Forever with the one I adore
And from sin and death, eternally free
To love you more and more

Psalm 10.........

Arise oh God and lift up your hand
For all around the wicked do stand
Like a lion in the den, they secretly wait
Crouched at the door, waiting at the gate

To devour the just and destroy without cause
To oppress the poor and all without pause
And no appeal to the wicked can make them budge
They neither consider their end, nor consider the Judge

Who is the Lord and King forever
And who holds time in His hand
It you Lord, bringing justice to the fatherless
And causing the righteous to stand

And on that day, when the Lord takes His place
The wicked will hide, they will cover their face
And they will cry out " we were ignorant you see"
Yet forever in darkness they forever shall be

Psalm 11.........

If the foundations be destroyed
What can the righteous do
For broad is the road that leads to hell
And the narrow road finds the few

And the enemy says to my soul
Fly like a bird in the night
For look, the wicked bend their bow
Now its time for you to take flight

But I shall stand upon the Lord
In Him I shall put my trust
For His eyes are on the sons of men
For all shall return to dust

Fire and brimestone and a burning wind
Shall be their portion,their lot
But the child of God shall stand that day
For by His blood they were bought

Psalm 12..........

Help oh Lord for the Godly man ceases
And the enemy pours in and breaks to pieces
The poor the afflicted and those who are needy
Are condemned by the vile, the wicked, the greedy

Now I will arise and deliver the poor
And deliver him safely through an open door
For my Word is like silver, tried and true
I will preserve them forever, though they be but few

Psalm 13............

Oh Lord have you forgotton me
How long will you hide your face
My heart is sorrowful every day
Oh how I miss your embrace

My fears are dark and my sleep is death
Shall I never hear thy voice again
My soul longs to walk with thee
To hear once more the glorious refrain

But I have trusted oh Lord in your mercy
For you are the glorious one
I shall rejoice in salvation and sing to the Lord
And sing of God's Holy Son

Psalm 14..............

The fool has said in his heart
That there is no God
And is corrupt in all of his ways
All the workers of iniquity
They have no knowledge
And are fast running out of their days

The Lord looks down from heaven
Upon the children of men
And is dismayed by all of their ways
For they have all turned aside
There are none do good
And are fast running out of their days

And out of Zion salvation comes
The Lord sets HIs people free
And Jacob rejoices and Israel is saved
For this day they have longed to see

Psalm 15.........

Who may come before your throne
And stand in that holy place
When I come there I am not alone
For in Christ I fall on my face

In Him I love when I'm reviled
And for evil I shed no tear
I come to you as a little child
And I tremble with Goldy fear.

Psalm 16....

In Your presence there is fullness of joy
And at your right hand, pleasures forevermore
Preserve me oh God, for in you shall I trust
And it is you that I worship and adore

Oh Lord you are my portion and my cup
Before you I fall as I lift you up
In the night seasons I know you are there
Despite the darkness, you hear my prayer

And now my flesh it rests in hope
And my heart is exceedingly glad
You are my right hand and cannot be moved
So I rejoice and cannot be sad

For saddness has given its way to joy
And in you I know I'm complete
The night has given way to the light of the day
Oh Lord I am found at your feet

Psalm 17...........

You have tested my heart
In the depths of the night
My transgressions are gone
From you they take flight
You have tried me oh Lord
Refined in your fire
I fell exceedingly low
But you lifted me higher
Under the shadow of your wings
I have taken my place
I hide myself in thee
As I gaze into your face
You arose and delivered
By your mighty sword
Strong is your right arm
In your presence and Word.

Psalm 18.....

I will call upon the Lord
Who is mighty to be praised
Though the pangs of death surround me
To Him my hands are raised

And when the Lord had heard my call
Into the darkness He did ride
On the wings of the wind He came to me
Thunder and lightenings were by His side

Hailstone and coals of fire rained down
And the enemy fell one by one
You heard me oh Lord in my calamitous state
And out of the fire stepped your Son

You have made my feet like the feet of the deer
You have set me upon a high place
You have enlarged my path and given me life
As I looked into your glorious face

Psalm 19..........

The soul is converted
And the simple made wise
The heart is rejoicing
There is light in our eyes

For the heavens declare
The glory of the Lord
There is no speech or language
Where this voice is not heard

What is sweeter than honey
More desirous than gold
What's more precious than silver
The Gospel story told

Let the words of my mouth
And the meditations of my heart
Glorify the King of Kings
For we shall never be apart

Psalm 20............

The battle belongs to the Lord
They are many and kicking up dust
In the day of trouble my enemy comes
In you alone will I place my trust

For the Lord our Saviour keeps His children
And in this fulfills their desire
In the field of battle the enemy falls
He ran into Gods furious fire

Who shall stand when our King comes forth
Mighty and glorious to fight
The enemy runs but there's nowehere to hide
For He puts ten thousand to flight

So now is the time to bend your knee
And acknowledge the name above names
For the Lord is coming to judge the earth
Not by flood but surely by flames

Psalm 21.......

With a crown of gold upon His head
He is the king of the living and the dead
And all who are alive in Christ will see
That they once were bound but now are free

Yet in the darkness His enemies stand
And the light of Christ it shines from above
From darkness to light, from hatred to love

Into His hand God delivers them all
The great and the lowly, the short and the tall
And who can resist when Christ Knocks on the door

And he who shall fall on his face

It is this generation that will seek your face
A generation that will turn against sin

The Lord is strong and mighty in battle
And the earth and all its fullness, the King's

Come now to my heart and fill
With majesty, glory, honor and praise
As we ascend thy most holy hill

Pardon my iniquity, cast my sins into the sea
And in your debt I shall forever be

All your paths are mercy and truth

Consider my enemies for they are many
And deliver me from their cruel hateful hand
Preserve me oh Lord in your righteousness
And forever on you I shall stand

Lord I have loved the habitation of your house
And the place where your glory rests

And rejoice that I stand in this place

Psalm 27..........

The Lord is my light and salvation
Of whom shall I fear?

A place where you can hide me

For you are the Lord God Almighty
When I am abandoned and have lost all hope
I know that you will never forsake me

Psalm 28.........

To those with evil in their heart

And from you they eternally depart

And decalare you most holy King

And breathe on them

Psalm 31......

In you oh Lord I put my trust
May I never be ashamed
For you are my Rock and strong high tower
And my wild heart you have tamed

I stand upon the solid Rock
Of Christ my King Divine
You lead and guide, you are my strength
I the branch, You the Vine

Consider my troubles oh Lord my God
In grief my eyes waste away
My bones are dry, I have no strength
My life is like an endless day

My enemies laugh, they are full of scorn
And fear lies on every side
I'm a broken vessel, forgotton and lost
And I'm drowning by an incoming tide

Yet I trust in you, you are my God
And my times they are in your hand

And in your presence I am free

And with my voice I did cry out

Even if I must surely die

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord
And the order of the stars is His to keep

So let the earth rejoice and the people stand in awe
He rides upon the circle of the earth
From heaven above, He sees the sons of men
They glorify the Lord they long to serve

No king is saved by the number of his men
His strength shall not deliver in that hour
Our hope is in the Lord and Him alone
Its by His Spirit not by might nor pow'r

So we wait upon you Lord
You are our strength and shield
We trust in you alone forever more

I sought the Lord and He heard me
He came down and dried up all of my tears

Let our faces shine as we gaze on thee
Let us run into our strong high tower
Let our faces shine as we gaze on thee
Exalting you in this our final hour

Oh taste and see that the Lord is good
And you can trust Him with all of your heart
Oh taste and see that the Lord is good
And from Him we shall never ever part

He is close to those whose hearts are broken
And He loves a spirit that it contrite
He is close to those whose hearts are broken
He will draw near when in our darkest night

And though the afflictions of the saints are many
The Lord delivers us out of them all
And although the affliciton of the saints are many
He always hears our desperate call

Psalm 35..........

You are a shield to me oh Lord
You are the salvation of my soul
May my enemies be as chaff before the wind
And rain on their heads fires of coal

Let all who rise up against you
And those who seek my life
Flee before the angel of the Lord
They are purveyors of misery and strife

My soul rejoices in your justice
And I cry " who is like unto you"
You see the distress of the poor and needy
Nothing is hidden from your view

Lord I have wept over my enemies heart
Yet they reward me evil for good
I fasted for them when they were sick
Yet they consumed me like devils food

How long oh Lord will you look on
As the evil sweeps in with the tide
Will you move your hand to stay the flood
Or shall I take to the cave and hide

Oh Lord I hear nothing, all is silence
And you seem to be far from me
My enemies rejoice at my falling
Oh Lord, can you not see?

Let them shout for joy and be glad
who favor the righteous cause
May you be high and lifted up
So we hear men and angels applause

Psalm 36.................

There's an oracle in my heart
And it bubbles up through me
It speaks of wicked men
And the God they cannot see

The river of your pleasures
Flows to the fountains of your life
And the wicked shall not prosper
Where the Bridegroom meets the bride

The tallest of the mountains
And the deepest of the seas
Are smaller than your faithfulness
That surely covers me

From the river of life I drink
And it quenches all my needs
Beneath the shadow of your wings
I will tell of your mighty deeds

Psalm 37............

The righteous man has little
And the wicked they are rich
But the Lord upholds His children
And the blind fall in a ditch

It seems that many prosper
And the righteous go unseen
But the Lord He sees in secret
And our hearts He washes clean

The Lord upholds the righteous
The wicked turn night to day
Their time is at an end
Like smoke, they shall blow away

The righteous they show mercy
And every one of their steps are planned
And though they fall, yet not forever
He upholds them with His hand

I once was young but now am old
Yet I have never begged for bread
He is faithful now and evermore
The Lord of the living and dead

Now if you wait upon the Lord
You shall inherit the land
You shall walk in peace and loving joy
And in His presence you shall stand

Psalm 38.............

Oh Father in your hot displeasure
Your arrow pierces deep
There is no soundness in my flesh
And my eyes continually weep

My sins consume me night and day
Foul and festering are my wounds
My heart it fails, I have no strength
And in the darkness I am consumed

I will declare my iniquity
And suffer turmoil for all my sin
Do not forsake me oh my Lord
Save me from what lies within

Psalm 39.................

I will guard my tongue and hold my peace
And be mute before my accuser
Not a word shall I utter in my defence
As I stand before my abuser

For I am nothing but a shadow and a vapour
I am a man who walks in sorrow
Like the grass of the field and the birds of the sky
Here today, but gone tomorrow

And the rich man builds a bigger barn
And for him the bell does toll
Oh foolish man you have discounted God
This very night He may require your soul

Oh hear my cry oh precious God
Avert your gaze from me
Until I'm covered by your Blood
And its Christ alone you see

Psalm 40...........

I waited patiently upon the Lord
That He may hear my cry
Surrounded by darkness on every side
In this place I will surely die

Where is this place I thought I knew
Its dark, its dimply lit
I looked around and all I could see
Was the bottom of the bottomless pit

I looked up and could see no light
And cried out " O God help me."
And in an instant His hand came down
And before I knew it I was free

I was out of the pit and standing on the Rock
I could feel the sun on my face
My heart was warm, there was a song on my lips
I was engulfed in a warm embrace

And now I delight to do your will
Your law is written on my heart
Neither death nor life or anything
Shall ever keep us apart

Psalm 41..............

In my time of trouble
The Lord shall deliver
Even on my sickbed
You are with me forever

Even when I am sick and weak
My enemies say "he'll not arise"
Yet you are merciful to me o Lord
Your glory fills the morning skies

I cannot even trust my friend
Who sat and ate my bread
And now I feel so much alone
He would also see me dead

Blessed be the Lord my God
Set me before your face forever
And though they seek to trample me
By your hand you shall surely deliver

Psalm 42.............

As the deer pants for the water
So my soul longs after thee
My heart wanders through this desert
And there is no joy in me

I remember the days of your presence
How your Spirit burned in me
Shall I forever wander in this desert?
O Lord shall I ever be free?

Night and day I continually weep
My tears have almost ran dry
My starving soul continues to seek
For the glorious one who reigns on high

Where is the voice of joy and praise
For I surely remember all the days
When we came and soght and found Him there
Yet now I'm lost and He is no-where

I will remember the Lord my King
And I will lift my voice and sing
Of all His glories and His deeds
So now my Lord my soul it pleads

My downcast soul cries out to deep
A song awakes me frm my sleep
Angel choirs they fill the night
My eyes are dried I have my sight

Now that I can clearly see
I hear my God say "trust in me."
And up from the dead my soul shall rise
To the Lord my King who heard my cries

Psalm 43..............

O Lord it seems that your not there
I seek you every day
The unjust man he taunts me Lord
And this is what I hear him say

There is no help, you are alone
Your God He does not care
He's fallen asleep, forgotton you
He simply is not there

But Lord I know and trust in you
With light and truth you fill
If I will follow these alone
They'll lead me to your hill

There I will come before my King
Into that holy place
Where hope and joy doth rule supreme
And crowned by all your grace

Psalm 44..........

Oh Lord we hear the tales
Of saints from long ago
Who came into your presence
And in your Spirit, flow

Your Shekinah fell like morning dew
Upon them one and all
Your glory and your majesty
Before your throne they fall

Its by the light of countenance
That we take the promised land
Its by your strength and your right arm
That we walk hand in hand

But now o Lord you've cast us off
And put us all to shame
The enemy comes and takes from us
And we shall never be the same

Arise O Lord, please do not sleep
Why do you hide your face
Our souls are bowed down to the dust
We cry out for your grace

Psalm 45............

You are fairer than the sons of men
Full of grace and majesty
Omnipotent and glorious
Sweet blessed Trinity

And in your majesty you ride
On the backs of love and grace
You live and reign forevermore
You are perfect in all your ways

Your throne O God is eternal
And majestic are all your ways
You are greater than the sons of men
Without number are all your days.
