Ontario Muslims want Sharia law

sermonindex Dec 21, 2004

TORONTO (CP) - Ontario Muslims should have the same rights as Catholics and Jews in the province to seek arbitration based on religious law for family disputes and inheritance cases, concludes a report by former attorney general Marion Boyd."The Arbitration Act should continue to allow disputes to be arbitrated using religious law," Boyd recommends in her report to the Ontario government. Boyd was appointed to study the issue after the Islamic Institute for Civil Justice requested the right to offer religious-based arbitrations for family disputes based on Sharia law.The proposal ran into opposition from women's groups, legal organizations and the Muslim Canadian Congress, who all warned that the 1,400-year-old Sharia law does not view women as equal. But Boyd determined Ontario should continue to allow religious-based arbitrations and mediations, including Sharia law, and recommended strengthening protections by requiring both parties to first seek independent legal advice.

Interesting... and how can the pluralists say no? There was undoubtedly some back-patting going on amongst them when they came up with the "hey, let's give them the right to administer their own religious law amongst themselves, it's only tolerant, right?" idea (or is there a different history behind that ordinance?). Now perhaps we will see if they will show the religion they've been pushing all along, which probably views any official repudiation of gender equality as rank heresy. But, as much as I might get a chuckle out of seeing two of our foes squabble amongst themselves (and one of them without even an internally consistent grounds to squabble upon), this is serious business. May the Lord spare those poor souls who would be oppressed under Sharia law if it were permitted in these cases in Ontario, and may He break that yoke across the world, if it be His will and timing... and may the Lord show the pluralists (and such) the foolishness of the way that appears straight before them and that at its end are the ways of death, and may He save them from that.
