Question about submission

L
Leeza Sep 9, 2011

I was on another christian web site that helps people with weight loss. I decided to follow there plan because it was focused on building a closer dependency on God, and though I that it would be a great guide and focus. It was well put together that way, really felt it was going well. They had an eating plan that included fasting every week, and my husband told me, no, dont do that. Your health is negatively effected by that, some people just cant fast. I was a bit disappointed, but saw his wisdom. I have had some issues, and have gotten a bit ill when I try that. He is devoted to God, and I know that he was not saying this lightly. Well, I let them know that hubby was not for my fasting, and that I felt I should be submissive to his leadership. I got an email saying that, well, I should be listening to God instead. I have decided to follow my husbands leading, because I think that is biblical. Opinions?

Sister it seems like your husband is a wise man and is concerned for your health. Listen to his wisdom. That is biblical to submit to his leadership. There are other safer says to lose weight that don't require fasting. Have you looked at Weight Watchers? Just heard on the new they have a proven track record to help people lose weight safely without risking their health.

I was really wanting to fast, but I read these verses:
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
So, for that reason, I felt it was best to do what he urged me to do. She said that I should put Jesus first (that when I followed my husbands guidance, I was interfering with that), and I want to do that, and thought that I am subjecting myself to Christ when I obey His word. These verses seemed pretty straightforward to me.
But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."
So, to obey the guidance of scripture here would be better than giving up food.
Again, thank you. I do have a wise husband. I know this is thornier in situations where women have husbands that are not looking after their best interest. That would be another discussion, and I would like to hear some wisdom on that.

This lady said you "should put Jesus first". What exactly did Jesus tell you?

jesus never said fast as a means to lose weight

i believe that is unbibilical, fasting is a spirutal exacise,

motive for fasting shold be spiritual , not carnal

losing weight is a carnal thing

Did he say that you can't do the diet or just the fasting portion of it?

If you think your husband is wrong, obey him anyway and pray about it. God has changed many a man's mind but remember he's also changed our minds in the process of praying!!! Be ready to have your mind changed. (to be for your husband and not against him!)

God bless,
Lisa

I really am not sure about fasting as a diet plan, seems like a plan that tries to spiritualize starving yourself for weightloss.

Now to fasting, Number 1 its none of the diet programs business whether you fast or not, infact Christ says we shouldn't be telling people of our fasting in general.

I had the same issue with my wife actually, not really an issue sometimes we feel lead to do something that our spouses just don't understand, so what did I do to ease my wife's mind on my health? For one I told her I would always inform her of when I was fasting and for how long I was going to fast. I am hypogylcemic and so if I don't eat something with sugar I not only get grumpy but I potentially can pass out, solution? When I fast I usually drink juices and milk to keep me going.

If you husband is not only with day long fasts and beyond that maybe he would be more comfortable with you just fasting a meal for a selected day. By any means its important to start slow and work your way up.

I do question one thing, Some people can't fast? This wouldn't stand really in light of God calling the entire nation of israel not only to a one day fast but to a 40 day fast, in which everyone fasted.

Do some research on fasting and you will be surprised to find that it can benefit the body, for one your always much better off with one less cheeseburger in your system, this is one advantage is your body with a long enough fast will detox itself from all the junk we usually eat. I understand your husband concern because my wife had the same but if done properly fasting can be really great for you. Also if he is super concerned about it go see your doctor and find out if your body could handle fasting.

If your doctor says no, then I would say don't do it and find other things you can fast, such as internet, televion, the news, etc

Getting your family comfortable with the idea of you fasting is greatly dependant on you learning researching and doing it the right way before ever pursuing it this tends to ease worried minds.

Thanks all of you for your helpful information. It is great to see this from different prospectives.
I have fasted for spiritual reasons in the past. I have found that very helpful. My husband has some health concerns for me, and though I dont fully agree, I believe that what is plainly stated in scripture is that I should submit to his leading. And I cant imagine thinking I would be spiritually honoring God by fasting if that is in conflict with His instruction to submit to my husband as the church submits to Christ. So, in my thinking, if I am seeking God, it would make sense that I would do so within His mandates.
I dont agree with his idea that some people just cant fast, but I know that he believes that sincerely based on my past illness when I have fasted. So, as Lisa said, even if he is wrong in this instance, I am safe to submit because
1. I know he intends to help not hurt me
2. He himself is submitted to Christ
3. Scriptures instruct us that if we Love Christ, we will obey Christ.
What I have suggested to him is that I take some nutritional supplement, and that I not take in any food per say for one day, and he said that he would be more comfortable. That way I am not focused on the pleasure of food, but on Christ. He was really worried about a no food fast.
The diet people are not suggesting the fasting as a weight loss thing, in principle, but rather as a way of seeking God and releasing from addiction, so I dont fault them on their idea. I was a bit confused to be instructed not to submit to my husband. but I realize that there are many outlooks on that. But, now my husband wants me to not follow their plan at all, he liked the weight watchers idea alot better (thanks for the suggestion). Also, he does not think I am addicted to food, or that I am an overeater, just need to make wise choices.

Nowhere in scripture is fasting demanded. Listen to your husband on this one.

That being said, your desire to fast is a good desire. Is there a food that seems to have a hold on you personally. For me that was once soda. In that case I could do a 40 day soda fast. How about coffee? How about brussel sprouts? :-)

The point is that fasting is not limited to all food nor to food specifically. Fast television or some other thing that seems to occupy lots of time and energy.

thanks, twayneb, I do really crave pasta, of all things. And am slightly addicted to Sermonindex!
so, I will give up the pasta and not the sermonindex, cause I can live without pasta.
Sermonindex has been like water in a dry land. Thanks to God for this website, and thank you all for "reasoning together" on this small insignificant question, helping me to seek God and what honors Him.
