Oh how we need to burn with the oil of God's anointing in our lives. The life we're called to live is absolutely dependent upon being perfectly in union and completely filled with the precious Holy Spirit.
When Moses saw that burning bush on Mt. Horeb he turned for a closer look for a strange fact that the bush was on fire, but it was not being consumed. The burning bush is probably the greatest illustration in all of the Bible that would show us a Christian on fire for Christ but at the same time not being consumed or burnt out that we hear so much about today.
Oil of course is the symbol of the Holy Spirit in Scripture. My grandma had oil lamps. She had to keep the lamps full of oil, trim the wicks, and keep the glass clean to give the best light. If the lamps ran out of oil the lamp would start to burn at the wick. As the wick started to burn not only would there be terrible light, and smoke, and smudge on the glass, but it would actually stink throughout the whole house.
I want to suggest that burning of the oil of God's anointing in our lives allows our life to burn clean. When we start burning at the wick, "the old self", we not only give a very, very poor light, but we actually stink the whole place up.
"Those who are in the flesh cannot please God" Romans 8:8. Young or old we must learn to burn of the oil of God's anointing in our lives so that our wick does not start to burn. Self love does take over. The only tool we have to come against self is the precious Holy Spirit. Ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
