Thanks Nasher,One of the more puzzling aspects of these types of 'debates' and something that always comes up watching any of the various 'documentaries' on the life of Jesus is how they totally miss the core issue."You must be born again"Seems the real questions are not asked or skimmed over;That the essence of Christianity is what?That throughout the Old Testament God was trying to convey what?What is the point of our existence?Why did Jesus come? And what did He declare?It just seems to come off as a department store, where you can try on various articles of clothing;"I like this hat of 'loving thy neighbor'""I like this shirt with the logo 'state of consciousness'""I like these pants, there like a metaphor for human goodness, reminds me of that Jesus guy"The problem with all of this is in the "I like".The elevation of mans opinions on what God has said. That in itself ought to be the starting point;God said.Even for the Jewish unbeliever in Jesus Christ, has the fear of God been lost? I guess that's what always got Israel in trouble, gets us all in trouble...I guess what I am struggling to say is that it is a deeply spiritual issue in that our hearts are corrupt. That the Holiness of God requires that we recognize this, that we become honest, fully honest about ourselves. What did Jesus do but bring a sword by revealing what was really in our hearts and fix the problem that only He could fix.And what I meant by a 'spiritual' issue is not that we are compartmentalized from being physical, but that our essence is in the breath that God breathed into us, otherwise we would be no more than clods of dirt stuck together.Scripture tells us what we are. Scripture tells us who God is. Scripture tells us that it is Jesus and Jesus alone by which we can come to the Father.Maybe what I really am trying to say is that it is a heart matter and that it gets largely ignored in these type's of things. All the explaining that Paul does in the epistles, Peter, James, John, what is it they are discussing?It just seems almost preposterous that the larger claims go without discussion. That God became man and walked on this earth. That the Holy Spirit can actually indwell in human beings. That we can become completely different beings than we once were.Joh 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. I mean, that's outrageous and yet it just gets swept under the rug while the discussion goes on and on about who said what when. Forget the substance...Don't know if I am expressing this the way I really want to...it just seems there is much dodging of what this is really all about.
