Occupy Forever

There's an understandable longing in our hearts to add permanence to the things we love. There's something unnatural about opening them up to let something in, only to have it leave again, just as soon as it has come.

Our hearts were meant to be mansions. Not hotels. The very corners of even - spaces, for the highest of our affections, the best of the things we call beloved.

But change is this world's constant and impermanence its perpetual condition. In that there is something good and bad. There's pain in it: in what is taken from us, in what we lose. In what we will and have lost. But there's gain in it as well: in faith, that forever is already occupied, by somone who loves us with a strong and lasting affection and who is worthy of our love.

Isaiah 57:15
