Dear Sister

As a "hard-core" Protestant, my definition of a "hard-core" Roman Catholic woman would be something akin to the people who came out to picnic with their children and pray the rosary, while being amused by the sight of men, women, and children being burned at the stake for praying the Lord's prayer in their own tongue. I don't think she is that kind of "hard-core" Roman Catholic though, right?

hmmmmm. This sounds like it could be a problem. You certainly know your poor mother best. If she really does believe in Jesus AND yet holds to the superstitions in her church as well, that could be a hindrance...
Yet, our Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. You say you know she loves Jesus... There have been those who were also caught up in the Roman fold, for whatever reason, who did still know and love the Lord Jesus, and were saved. Have you read St Francis of Assisi, or sang his hymn, "All Creatures of Our God and King?" Have you read Brother Lawrence's the Practice of the Presence of God? http://thepracticeofthepresenceofgod.com/onlinetext/
The true Gospel, the only Gospel that saves, is startlingly simple. It is encapsulated in I Corinthians 15:1-4 -
"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures..."
Ma'am, My mother-in-law is Roman catholic too. My wife and I have made the most progress with her when we stopped arguing with her about the Mass, (which she didn't even understand), and the Pope, and just began to speak to her about Jesus, and live before her the plain and simple Gospel that points squarely at Him alone. And I think she is coming, dear Sister, and I think one I day, (soon I pray), I will be able to say, she came!
May it be so with your dear mother, Ma'am, as well. May God save her to the uttermost. Even if she doesn't understand all the secondary things so well, may she one day very soon completely grasp the most important thing of all: the love of God for her in the glorious face of Jesus Christ her Lord and Saviour. AMEN.
Be well and may God abundantly bless you and yours this very day.
